Great Sports Games: Presentation and Not Just Gameplay? Stuck
Posted on March 23, 2012 at 12:21 PM.

It's happening. Right now.

March Madness truly describes anything that goes on in this month involving a bracket.

The second version of the Greatest Sports Game Ever Tournament is now down to it's final eight games, and we are guaranteed a new and fresh championship matchup since both NFL 2K5 and College Hoops 2K8 went down in the Sweet 16.

Unthinkable. Shocking.

Ever since the first Greatest Sports Game Ever Tournament, both of those games have been the cornerstone upon which all arguments have been built on OS.

"If only Madden had 2K5's presentation."

"If only someone would make a College Hoops game that could stand up to 2K8."

But now? Now they've been defeated by MLB '10: The Show and WWF No Mercy. Both are, themselves, worthy games no doubt. But it seemed almost a foregone conclusion that both 2K5 and 2K8 would be at least in the Final Four. But they're not, and it makes me wonder why games truly become great in the first place.

Let's consider both of the aforementioned games. It's blasphemy to say this on OS I know, but both games had serious flaws. College Hoops 2K8 received a (deservingly) low review score on OS because the initial game simply didn't play that well. Over time that improved, but the gameplay is still nowhere near say, NBA 2K11. What CH 2K8 has going for it is an incredible Legacy Mode that is still tough to top by anyone in this genre.

Rewind even further to NFL 2K5. People forget there was an intense debate in 2004 about which game had the best gameplay, and the clear consensus amongst critics seemed to be Madden NFL 2005 actually sported the better gameplay but 2K5 won in terms of presentation and intangibles. In hindsight, I'm not sure if that was true, but it's worth considering that 2K5's true standout feature was it's presentation.

But we can get into this with any old title. The gameplay tends to be the element to bring you in, but the presentation and modes seems to always define how long of a legacy a game can leave in your heart. Tecmo Super Bowl was an easy, easy game. The gameplay was simplistic. But the presentation and all of the game's flair are what made people really fall in love with the game.

There are exceptions, but I do tend to believe that the games which truly leave a lasting mark on our minds do so because they not only do gameplay right, but they do it all in a way that's unique enough to leave a memory.

Gameplay is important, don't let me minimize it. But I tend to believe that for a game to become a lasting classic -- it has to present the sport it's presenting in a way where people will remember it.

As for me? I'm going to go back and try to flip a coin to decide upon how my vote will be cast in these upcoming Elite Eight Matchups in the Greatest Sports Game Ever Tournament.

I agree presentation is huge just for the replay value you can at least go 5 years with a quality presentation game with out buying a new game because your dynasty doesnt get stale I probably won't buy another NBA or mlb game for another 4 years because the presentation in NBA 2k12 and the show 12 is just that good. I just upgraded from college football 06 and NFL 2k5. But after playing madden and it's lack of in depth commentary halftime show and overall barebones presentation I'm going back to 2k5 lol

god damit this is what is wrong with games today. People want to see presentation like team entrances, players wearing towels, or if the player has the right cleats on. We are years behind where the gameplay should be but people just want presentation. I agree that a 2k5s halftime report was awesome and 2k8 crowd was awesome but those should be in todays games by now. It just gives a developer an excuse every year they dont put it in to not work on gameplay.

I guess im the only one left who plays a game for the gameplay. I consider crowd noise and crowd aspects to be included in gameplay..it just pisses me off when people want team entrances ****. And now this article just gives EA another reason to focus on presentation...sigh

I had two complaints about NFL2K5. I hated the passing mechanics. I hated the generic announcing team. I respect the fans of the game, though. It was a great alternative to Madden, and it makes you wonder how good that series would be now, if not for the NFL license being sold to EA.

I agree Aggies, also the passing game was fantastic, both the passing and commentary have yet to me matched in the football genre IMO.

@newtonfb presentation isn't the only thing people want. Plenty of gamers on this site complain about gameplay. I think whatwe all of want is a more cohesive representation of both gameplay and presentation in a sports game. I mean its 2012 these things shouldn't even be an issue. But I do know M13 commentary better be on point this year or I'm not buying. Commentary ruined M12 by its self.

Well, a game consists if both elements so both elements should be good. So a waffle cone should have a good cone and good ice cream. Why do people feel we have to choose one or the other?

Yeah I want the waffle cone and the ice cream....with some sprinkles too (robust online modes and good online performance)!

There is a big difference in the type of presentation we see now a days and the presentation in the two games mentioned.

Nobody is saying we WANT presentation as the main selling point for a game. And I can assure you that nobody wants presentation elements that once you see once its garbage. Team entrances are great, Once! The presentation these games had were weekly shows, selection shows, post season shows. Things that had replay value and were actually fun to watch.

Commentary is one of the most important parts of presentation and it is lacking in our football games today, and after about a day your forced to play the game on mute w/ music in the background.

i agree about the commentary. I for one love the 2k5 commentary.

I could care less about presentation. Gameplay is what keeps me playing the game, presentation is fun for awhile but gets stale quick. For example the last few games in the NBA 2K series I had to shut off the commentary because it would get too repetitive. Without addicting gameplay the game wouldnt survive long enough in a players regular rotation for them to experience the presentation to the fullest. Its all about the gameplay people

Since nfl 2k5 and CH2k8 are pretty old games I wonder how many people that voted have actually played them? If they were remade with improved graphics how would they be ranked among other games?

Agree agree agree!!!!!! A hundred times over.

This is exactly what us gamers who post things on OS about presentation are talking about.

*Yes!!!! We understand that gameplay is the number one aspect. But there's a reason why these games are winning out. Because the have good gameplay but they also have the additional things that give the game LIFE.

Example:
I personally think FIFA has the best gameplay of almost all sports games. But it falls short of really feeling like the game is actually on TV. No halftime show, no postgame, very few stat banners, no season related commentary, etc.

BUT, NBA 2K's gameplay is good too. PLUS....its just a much much deeper game beyond just gameplay. Halftime show, sideline reporter, season related stat banners, etc. Fells like playing a game on TNT.

Needless to say....I enjoy 2K alot more.

Agreed, they weren't desperate. I think they sensed a strong 2k4 and the fact that they were aware they had a good product in 2k5 I think they were going for the kill. And I think what it did was say to NFL what is going on and they decided exclusive lisence was in their best interest.

guess I will have to start voting. I seriously thought that the opinions of most here would reflect my opinion. I am sadden that most of your selections have been a joke to me. I must now intervene.
