MLB Front Office Manager Giveaway: Question #2 (Chicago/St. Louis Edition!)
Posted on February 3, 2009 at 10:14 AM.
The game continues. I'm throwing Question #2 is out there now, maybe it will be a little easier? This is a googlers nightmare contest because the information you want will not be in one easy place.

Question: The Chicago/St. Louis baseball feud has been going on for quite some time. What was the score of the first game for the Chicago White Stockings professional club between these two cities and what was the date? Of course, that's not easy enough, I also want to know who pitched that game for the winning club.

(Hint: Teams typically only carried one pitcher in those days)

Good find clarke, i couldnt get 1875 to come up in searches. Then of course after you posted that I found it within like 30 seconds.

Still not sure if that's the right answer. Chicago started in 1871, that's all I'm saying.

Actually, everyone is wrong so far. Keep searching those of you who haven't answered!

April 29th 1870 - Chicago White Stockings vs. St. Louis Unions - The White Stocking beat the Union 47-1. Winning pitcher George Zettlein

# 7 RaychelSnr @ Feb 3
Very close kw, you almost got a commanding two point lead in this short contest...but there is a detail in your answer that is very wrong

# 8 kwrichardson81 @ Feb 3
The White Stockings played the Unions in an exhibition April 29th 1870. The score was 47-1. The White Stockings only had George Zettlein back then (and some guy named Ed Pinkham for a couple games). I gotta stand by my answer!

# 9 RaychelSnr @ Feb 3
In 1870, Zettlein played for the Brooklyn Atlantics as he hit a winning run in for the Atlantics against the Redstockings in an 8-7 win to break the Redstocking's 84 game win streak

Was Albert Goodwill Spalding the pitcher?

# 11 kwrichardson81 @ Feb 3
Ah. I read that wrong. I thought Zettlein was pitching in that game, not the hitter that drove in the winning run

# 12 kwrichardson81 @ Feb 3
SO then it was Ed Pinkham

# 13 RaychelSnr @ Feb 3
You already answered kw...so someone else is going to get this one right

# 14 Stormyhog @ Feb 3
game was friday may 5 1876 score was 1-0 for st.louis and the winning pitcher was george bradley

# 15 RaychelSnr @ Feb 3
Sheesh! No, that's not close. It doesn't help the answer is already in this thing...someone just needs to capitalize on the opportunity and take the point!

We're only doing 7 questions...BTW, had a couple of PMs about it
