MLB '12: The Show Vita Impressions Stuck
Posted on March 8, 2012 at 12:18 PM.

As a precursor to Dustin's review coming up here soon, here are my quick hitting impressions of The Show on the Vita to hopefully supplement Dustin's efforts.

First Thoughts

This is almost like the console version. That's the best way to describe my first thoughts about the game in a way that seems coherent. Jumping into the game, getting to the ballpark, seeing the players moving around -- it just felt like the Show should feel, but it was in my hands and not on my TV screen.

I know that's not profound in any way -- but my first impressions don't lie, until they do of course.

Hitting

One of the new features of The Show is its new ball physics and thus, a promised new wide variety of hits and ball actions off of the wall. Don't be fooled, while the changes seem minor unless you are a big baseball fan while playing the game, the game now plays a different and more refined brand of baseball due to the new ball physics. I like the changes personally after seeing them in action in a few games on both the console and Vita versions of the game. While I need to play several more games to really get the best feel for the new physics, they really seem like they add that extra little bit to the game it's been missing when the ball is in play.

Pitching

In all honesty the Show has been trying to find a pitching mechanic that works as well as 2K's since they introduced analog pitching. That's the hard truth to fans of the series, and instead of copying that success the SCEA crew is trying out yet another new mechanic called 'Pulse Pitching.' My first impressions are that the new mechanic is fun and simple both on the Vita and PS3. While I honestly feel like it's more a gimmick to once again try something that isn't analog pitching, it's still a pretty solid alternative.

All That Other Stuff

I'm only still playing exhibition games so I can only really comment on the in-game aspects thus far. The graphics are good, with great animations and solid stadium models to play in. The commentary is ok, but it's quickly becoming the series' weak point -- and it especially shows on the Vita.

I'm going to dive into the game modes and such today. I'll hopefully have another batch of impressions as soon as tomorrow!

I aggree 100% . the pulse pitching does take time to get down, but its an amazing port over from the PS3 .... and with the cloud saving feature that allows you to continue your season or franchise on the PS3 is the future of sports gaming

if the first one out of the gate is this good, I can only imagine whats to come. I was stunned how well put together this game was.

Co-sign. San Diego did a great job on both versions.
