Vita Game Impressions (FIFA, ModNation, F1 2011) Stuck
Posted on February 15, 2012 at 11:38 PM.
My experiences with the Vita have been pretty positive so far, so sayeth my earlier blog. As the Executive Editor, I'm reviewing three games for the launch of the Vita: ModNation Racers Roadtrip, F1 2011, and FIFA Soccer.

Here's some quick hitting impressions of each game.

FIFA Soccer

This is, IMO, the best game out of my bunch. FIFA Soccer is a very smooth transition to the PS Vita. I felt right at home with the game and it's controls, although I had to instantly turn off the back touch screen because I couldn't hold the Vita properly and still be able to play the game without passes going in crazy directions. Regardless, I'm pretty high on FIFA at this point.

ModNation Racers: Road Trip

This is the game with the biggest mixed bag. It's fun, it's got some really cool features -- and as a newcomer to the franchise I really like it all. However, knowing what the franchise has been all about and knowing some more background on what's translated over -- I am a bit more underwhelmed than I should be. This game is a solid cart racer -- it's just not going to measure up to other products I don't think. But as for me, I like creating my own tracks and racing and all that fun stuff. The game works, it looks not great or good but merely ok, and it plays relatively smooth. The jury is out on this one.

F1 2011

This is the game which I always figured was a wildcard depending on how it was done. F1 doesn't do any of the touch screen controls, and it's supposed to be an incredibly deep racer -- which may or may not translate well to the Vita platform. However, while the game plays smooth and 'right', the default controls really aren't well thought out. I haven't yet looked to see if I could change them (ModNation's controls are much better FWIW) -- but I'm pretty certain F1 2011 is going to be that game which frustrates just as much as it excites.

So what games are you playing on your Vita? What do you think of them?

FIFA should be good enough to pass the time till the show drops. Thanks for the info dude.

FIFA is great. I adjusted to the back touch panel pretty easily, though I am a smaller dude, so that probably helps. Still, I'd rather not use the back touch panel to shoot, because it seems a bit awkward. I find it more useful on free kicks.

I could see the use on Free Kicks, just became incredibly difficult for me to hold the vita with my hands and not constantly touch the rear touchpad. Regardless though, I know I want to keep playing FIFA over the other games at this point, with an occasional visit to ModNation to create a new crazy track. My Jungle track I created last night was ridiculous.

Just some more info for you guys who might be interested in the games above. All the games listed are sub par with Fifa being the best of them. The AI in fifa is a joke as in that they are 100% perfect. Every shot that the ai attempts on Legendary goes in. The game is fun and can be extremely frustrating. The online mode in Fifa is disappointing. It is the same as Fifa 11's online. The goalkeepers are bad. If you are a soccer fanatic, this game is not for you. If you don't really watch soccer, this game is perfect for you.

Modnation racers is a whatever game.

F1 2011 is competing with asphalt for worst vita launch game. It is a direct 3ds port. I repeat, do not pay full price for this game. In fact, do not buy this game. The graphics are rather bad when compared to vita games. It is missing so many things from the console version. This game is the definition of a colossal failure. I expect it to shift less than 100 000 units. Firstly, F1 isn't that big in North America but more importantly, its a rubbish game.
