Road to Glory: Almost There Stuck
Posted on July 20, 2011 at 06:40 PM.

For the first time ever, I'm playing Road to Glory over Dynasty mode.

Read that again.

I'm shocked as well.

While I think the Coaching Carousel is a good addition to Dynasty, my early days with NCAA Football 12 have almost exclusively been spent playing Road to Glory. Between the High School season mode (awesome) and the new Coach Trust feature (better) -- Road to Glory is finally getting to a point where I consider it a good alternative.

And while Rome wasn't build in a day, I think Road to Glory can be perfected in the next year. It's that close. Here's what needs to happen:

The High School Mode Needs to Be Beefed Up -- EA, you've come across brilliance here. I'm serious.....you're pretty darned close to having a game within a game. We need more High School Stadiums with better backdrops (rural schools won't quite have the...ahem....huge high schools) for starters. But more importantly, we need to have a State Top 10 Poll, the ability to see conference or district standings, and make it be possible to import as many teambuilder teams and whatnot as possible. The generic-ness is fine....as is the ability to have users do the extra work. My suggestion is to allow users to package together high school files and whatnot so you can batch download them. For instance, if you want to play Road to Glory in Texas 5A High School Football, the game can accommodate that. The technology is there via dynamic scheduling and conference set up, it's only a small bit of tweaking away.

And I wouldn't complain if you had the option to start as a High School Junior as well.....in case you think this is a lot of work for 1/5 of the mode. Make it 1/3 and it's suddenly a big deal.

The Being Recruited Process is Lame -- I know the NCAA would never go for being offered special perks and such through recruiting...but why can't coaches actively show you attention and make you promises. For instance, why can't LSU offer me the starting job my Sophomore year after their Senior QB Graduates while Texas Tech is offering me the Starting Job as a Freshman? Also, why am I not being given the challenge of balancing committing early to a powerhouse or having a team lose interest and move on to another recruit?

Also, your recruiting rating should always be in jeopardy. Play well, you keep getting XP but have bad games and your XP should go down. You should never get positive points for a game where you throw 3 INTs, complete less than 50% of your passes, and lose the game...yet I did once. Having to consistently perform to work your way up would add A LOT to the whole process. And back to the being recruited thing again...why can't coaches from the schools recruiting you leave a comment about your performance and status? It'd be like recruiting in dynasty in reverse...and way too cool.

Oh and did I mention you should be able to see the depth charts of the teams recruiting you? Yeah.

On campus -- I should never be able to work my way into the starting job over an established player who is playing well. I know this is done to add more intrigue to the user....but come on now. Let's go for some realism (or add the option to turn this on) so if I want to sit behind a Senior for a year or two, that's my problem and fault for picking that school over one where I could've started.

Otherwise, there are numerous other things which you could and should deal with. For instance, why not add options to balance your camaraderie with teammates or your academics? I wouldn't be opposed to having academic multipliers and whatnot as an attribute in Road to Glory. Plus anything to focus on academics will make the NCAA extremely happy....and it'd just add another level to the entire mode.

So what do you think? Is Road to Glory worth focusing on? What do you think of my suggestions? What are some of yours? Sound off!!

I like the ideas here.

RTG has quite a few things to iron out. Away HS uniforms can have white numbers on white jerseys. The HS team name can inadvertently change. The opponents records seem to be randomly generated (I faced a school that was 0-6 in the regular season, but the had an undefeated record in the state championship).
