March is the month made for Sports Gamers Stuck
Posted on January 28, 2011 at 07:07 PM.

It seems as if a perfect storm is rising for the month of March in our genre.

It is a very rare event that so many games with so many questions surrounding them are released within a month's time period. We typically consider the Fall a big time for releases here at OS, when we have Madden, NHL, and NBA games all out in a three month period along with any other big holiday titles in the racing or miscellaneous category.

But this March might be on of our busiest ever. Let's break down the month:

March 1: Fight Night: Champion. EA's big name fighter is hitting store shelves with an 'M' rating and a new twist -- will it be enough to satisfy longtime fans of the series and will the more mature angle be a commercial success? These are important questions which will determine more than you think as far as our genre's future.

March 8: It is baseball season, as The Show and MLB 2K hit store shelves. There are the typical questions you'd have about some AAA titles in our genre, and there are some exciting new twists abound for both games (in different ways of course). And then there is the whole Take Two hates MLB 2K and its exclusive agreement angle we'll be able to watch.

March 15:
The newest Top Spin 4 hits store shelves. This game isn't too big in America, but in Europe Top Spin is one of the best selling sports franchises of the past several years. It will be interesting to see how the latest title in the series shapes up.

March 29: Both WWE All Stars and the new Tiger Woods PGA Tour hit store shelves, the latter featuring Augusta National in a video game for the first time ever. That will be a watershed moment and if WWE All-Stars turns out to be a surprise hit -- this would be a great cap to what might be a great month.

And we haven't even discussed the first NASCAR game in years on the 29th or Shift 2. We are watching the former title with extreme interest given the popularity of NASCAR in America coupled with the lack of any good games for the sport in quite some time. That could be a perfect storm brewing.

Either way, I'm looking forward to what might be one of our finest months in awhile as sports gamers. What titles are you looking at for March and what questions do you have about the games coming out? Let's anticipate what might be a great month of sports gaming together!

I already pre ordered Fight Night and MLb11 the show at best buy. I might think about picking up top spin 4 also , so i can get into a mix of different sports. March is going to be a good month for Sports video Games though.

With the exception of WWE All-Stars I'm going to pick up all these titles. Barring any really bad press I'm intending to buy both baseball titles. Although I expect The Show to be the game I'm interested to see where 2K's title is heading.
I must say I was surprised to hear of such an early release of PGA this year. This may well be because, other than a few new courses & pros along with a couple of new commentators (that will likely be as dull as ever) we probably won't see much change from last years effort.

Good read Chris, The Show and Fight Night are launch day purchases, but I got to say I'm really interested in the WWE All Stars though and may add this to my purchase list as well

I am sure PGA is coming out when it is to get it in consumers hands before the Masters in early April. Being able to play Agusta is a big draw and hopefully they have done SOMETHING to refine Move Support as it actually wasnt bad last year.
