The Gaming Fitness Challenge -- Or Can You Get Fit Via Video Games? Stuck
Posted on December 13, 2010 at 07:43 PM.

It's been a couple of years since the fitness game genre has really come to prominence with Wii Fit and EA Sports Active. Yours truly has really ignored these games because I already had a fitness plan and didn't really care to try them.

However, either by sheer curiosity or divine inspiration I have decided to take on both EA Sports Active 2 and Wii Fit Plus to see exactly how both products help with fitness or weight loss goals. You can also consider this an expanded review of each product as I am going to spend the entire winter, or the next 90 days using both products to keep the holiday pounds away and to get in the best shape I possibly can before filming begins on the new season of my web series Tornado Titans -- which you can totally watch on YouTube here. When the spring comes, it's gas station burritos and sitting in a car for hours a day -- so my quest for fitness will end until the summer.

So here's some necessary background information and also a bit of a procedure on how I'm going to tackle this. First, as for me -- I'm a 24 year old male who is 6'1", 190lbs and in reasonably good shape. I have recently not been able to workout due to a really bad sprained ankle and today is the first time I have been able to workout since that injury. Thus, this could be interesting in that regard.

Each day, I will do the daily workout in the six week program in EA Sports Active while also doing exercises in Wii Fit Plus to work on balance, posture and flexibility. So in layman's terms, I'm mixing both products -- something a beginner might not be apt to do but that I feel I'm more than capable of handling. Also, I will catalog whether I'm staying within a good diet, since no exercise program (or diet) is complete without the other.

Finally, I want to invite everyone else to join me in this crusade by trying these games out yourself and sticking to your workout plan. We will have OS staff members joining this daily feature from time to time to comment on the games and how the exercises work for them, since the category of fitness is probably about as subjective as you would think. If you want to catalog your own progress within your blog here on OS, let me know via private message and I will start linking to your blogs each day and we'll try to place as many as we can on the front page.

I will say that we are going to have a special prize pack for the best user blog (mine or staff blogs aren't eligible) as voted on by the readers when this feature ends on March 1! We will reveal more details on this contest in a few days!

My day one workout is coming up, so I will have a report on later this evening on how things go!!!

I would really like to join in. I think I'm going to wait until the first for the first of the year to give me a real hard start date and the festive christmas activities don't take over! I also need to do a little research games wise. I just got a kinect, Ironically from Burger King. So I would like to either use The Biggest Loser or or The fitness evolved game...
