EA Sports MMA still a complete mystery... Stuck
Posted on October 25, 2010 at 11:42 AM.

Shocking news just in: EA Sports' latest game, based upon a niche sport's niche associations, isn't selling well.

I'll give you a moment to get your jaw off the floor.

Because let's face it, you didn't see that one coming. It's like EA developed an NCAA Hockey game and is now shocked to see it selling poorly.

Or was that NCAA Baseball?

Nonetheless, the enigma of EA Sports MMA will continue to perplex me. I'm casually certain EA was just hoping the UFC license would come open and they'd be able to develop a UFC game off their MMA codebase -- although with corporate suits, you can never be too sure to apply solid logic in relation to the decisions they make.

Was EA expecting the game to sell well?

Were they expecting a debut franchise to be a critical success when everyone who's developed a debut sports title has failed on this console thus far to do just that?

Either way, I'm casually certain that with UFC renewing their deal with THQ through 2018, EA Sports MMA is already done as a franchise. No sense in continuing it, hardly anyone in America can tell you who 98% of the guys in the game are anyways.

Marketing a game which isn't marketable is kind of a catch-22 you know?

However, you hardcore MMA fans do get bonus points for naming more than 10 of the fighters from memory and anything they've ever done.

Regardless, EA Sports MMA was a failed idea from the start. It's not shocking, nor is it even remotely surprising to hear this iteration of the game is likely both the first and last.

Perhaps we'll someday see the franchise revived -- my guess is around 2017 or so.

I may end up eventually getting it. But it'll be used and a few years down the road......after I get bored with UFC.

I hope EA's online servers are MUCH better than THQ'a FAILED attempt at an online game. Traded mine back in within 2 weeks of purchase.

Listen. I was incredibly hesitant about getting this game. I was expecting to prefer UFC much more. It is MILES better than UFC 10, and I think it's better than UFC 09 as well. If you're into MMA or you just like beating people senseless in games, at least RENT this game. I promise you won't regret it.

Also, this was an incredibly narrow-minded article.

This post shows you haven't taken the time to play the game or know nothing about MMA. The reason it isn't selling is because it's not the UFC Brand. That's a shame because for anyone that's more than just a casual MMA fan it's clear to see that EA MMA is a much better representation of MMA than either of THQ's titles.

Any real fan of MMA and MMA Gaming is upset by the rumours of this title being 1 and done.

it's sad and i'm not looking forward to the future of MMA games as much as i was yesterday.

How can you be so certain about a point you are speculating about! This is not informed, nor do you have a source for your point! Did someone at EA confirm your assumption? When did you become so familiar with the inner workings of a major company?

It is a shame that you are allowed to post 98% of the non sense you write about on the main page of this site! If this was a blog off to the right of the page, it would better serve the readers that come to OS!

@NYG_Meth -- I fail to see where talking about how a game not selling well and not being very marketable is narrow minded. It's more like delivering the truth, whether people want to hear it or not. Most people in America can't tell you who anyone on EA Sports MMA is, while a majority could at least point out who Kobe Bryant is. Thus, the game was facing an uphill battle from the start. Given it's not getting awesome reviews and that the UFC license just isn't coming open any time soon...it's no surprise the game isn't selling well and it won't be shocking to see this be the first and only iteration of the franchise.

@Falzon: You do realize that's exactly what I am saying (the game isn't marketable because it's not a UFC game so it really has no chance in today's marketplace?)

@TheCreep -- I actually wrote a semi-positive review of the demo and have played some of the retail. The game is good, but it's far from great. But quality is only a very small portion of why EA Sports MMA isn't selling well (if any).

@ms24forever -- It's pretty simple, read my response to NYG_Meth. I've been covering this business for over a decade, and it's pretty easy to see when a title isn't going to last long. When it sells horribly (like EA Sports MMA appears to be doing) then there's no reason to keep the franchise afloat with no way to market an unmarketable game. It's not just me saying this, there has been a couple of analysts say just this. In a lot of ways, I'm last on the boat here in saying EA Sports MMA won't be around too long with bad sales

@MMChrisS - Your response to NYG_Meth says that the game isn't getting "awesome" reviews. Well, so far its metacritic is an 8. That's a "great" review for Gamespot's ratings even though their review is 7.5 which is still good. I'm only a casual mma fan but a lot of my friends are hardcore fans and even they say that this game is good if not better than UFC. I think the "experts" are quick to say this game is a failure as it has only been out for two weeks. "It" is a "new" franchise so you gotta give it some time.

I know this isn't really the best comparison but DJ Hero was a new franchise last year and didn't really sell that well even though it has a metacritic score of 8.5. Well, they still released a sequel didn't they?

Just sayin man. Just sayin.

@D Apocalypse -- It's not getting awesome reviews. Check games like NBA 2K11 or Civilization V for what awesome reviews mean. An 80 metacritic is solid though, but it's not great by any means. With such an unknown cast of characters and the perception of the game as a sports simulation, you have serious issues marketing a game which is just ok. Time and time again throughout our genres history it's been proven that above average to good doesn't cut it unless you have the best license around. That's why UFC Undisputed will be here long after EA Sports MMA is gone, for better or worse. Ask the many non major licensed sports games how they fared after pretty good (see: All Pro Football 2K8 for a good reference).

Also, DJ Hero sold well over 2 million copies, roughly in line with what NBA 2K sells. EA Sports MMA *may* break a few hundred thousand overall....maybe. That's quite a difference to be making a comparison.

I think that EA should just bite the bullet and drop the price of the game to maybe $40. That should help sales of the game. I'm pretty sure DJ Hero didn't start out that great sales wise and I remember them dropping the price right away which obviously contributed to the good sales it eventually got. A couple of my friends who are hardcore UFC fans weren't completely sold on the game, but after they played it at my house this past weekend, one is definitely getting it and the other will most likely get it. It's just that it's that time of the year where there's just too many "good" games coming out.

I'm really pulling for this game to succeed. I don't want it to be one and done like APF 2K8.

One more thing I want to point out. The fact that you can create fighters and share them online made the game more intriguing for my buddies. There's already a big list of UFC fighters created that can be downloaded in 2 seconds. Most of them look like their real life counterpart. The announcers even say Brock Lesnar's name! They actually say his whole name and not just his last. Kudos to EA for adding that in their audio development.

I'm no EA fanboy. I hate them for having the NFL license but that won't make me stop from hoping that this game has a sequel in 2 years.

MMC is correct. You could make make a technically perfect boxing game... but if the only playable characters are retired Mexican strawweights, who's buying it and what future would it have?

EA MMA is APK with even LESS star power.

The fate of this game does illustrate an interesting dynamic:
Gameplay is secondary to name recognition... not that EA MMA's gameplay is stellar.

In short, (We) buy the UFC payperviews... does anyone else even have ppv's?
(Who cares?, you say)
"Exactly"

Good effort... bad business model.

Madden can suck all to hell... but who wants to play with a team called the Cleveland Steamers?
If recognizable brand names didn't matter, 2k would have released "Pro Football 2k6"...
Without a license, you can't be in the driver's seat.
