The tough question facing 2K very, very soon Stuck
Posted on October 6, 2010 at 09:23 PM.

The folks at 2K Sports are probably popping the champagne right now and partying like it's 1999 all over again.

As they should be.

Not only has the 2K Basketball team completed a masterpiece of a game, they've also managed to create perhaps the best sports game not only of this generation, but of all time. Time will tell whether that is a title NBA 2K11 can hold or not, but I can guarantee the game will at least be in the discussion.

And after the champagne is drank, the party over, and the office back to normal the folks at 2K have to answer what might be the most important question of all:

"What next?"

Because in the business of yearly sports game releases, there's not much time to celebrate or enjoy success. It's back to work, trying to one-up your previous effort, keeping the formula fresh, yet not too fresh.

Ask Kobe and the Lakers how hard it is to defend a title and stay on top of the mountain. It's tough business defending a championship.

Expectations are going to be very high for next year. The temptation to stray away from what got you to the top t in order to innovate your way to a new hit will be present...as will the temptation to not mess with things too much at all in order to protect what's already there.

Both would be gigantic mistakes.

There are some things which 2K is going to have to inevitably fix, things which come with their basic approach to basketball, like being stuck in an animation at points during the game. 2K is also going to have to figure out how to deliver a mode like the Jordan Modes in 2K11. Because unless 2K Sports is going to go with a perennial coverman, they're going to probably not be able to keep the Jordan modes in the game as is. Then there is the issue of expanding in depth and usability the other modes of the game such as Association mode.

2K finds itself inside of a trap of stellar expectations mixed with harsh realities. However, you can't go away from what got you to the point you are too much too fast but you can't also sit on your release and issue a title many would call stale next year.

The developers at 2K Sports are simply going to have to find the magic medium.

This year, 2K Sports went above and beyond what they've ever done in a yearly release, but that was after a year which the series possibly regressed slightly and at least was going nowhere by not pushing the envelope in any meaningful ways. Thus, they're one for two the previous two years.

My request is: don't stray too far from what got you here, but just know there are some fundamental issues with control which need to be fixed. However, also realize you have perhaps the best sports game ever, but also realize it's not perfect.

We could go round and round on this for hours you know?

2K should be very pleased with their title this year, it's nothing short of a bonafide all-time classic. However, in several months gamers will begin asking the question which will need a good answer. I hope you are ready for it 2K Sports:

"What next?"

More championship teams and classic games during their title runs.

Great question! This game is Awesome. How does it get better? What can make it more appealing and fun and realistic

Very insightful article. I haven't picked it up yet but I'm so curious to know how long this game will last me. Every year has improved but I have found the little things that have taken the fun out of the game eventually. I have high expectations for this title which would lead to the perfect time when 2K could seriously start their every other year cycle. It's been a long time coming for this team.

That is the best question that none of us can answer until we get our hands on NBA 2K12. Maybe changing the way "My Player" is incorperated in the game since it didn't get too much of a change from last year. Having the ability to import your 2K11 player to 2K12 so your not starting over again. This is something I have been dying to see in a sports game. But either way, they have a lot to cover.

Honestly this is exactly what I've been afraid of. What the heck can they do now?

One thing I can agree with as Naot said: I would love to see more classic and championship teams. It is a TON of fun playing with the old Celtics, Lakers, Bulls and such.

Now I wanna see Dr. J and the Sixers, Iceman and the Spurs, the Twin Towers in Houston, Lakers with Kareem, the Bucks with Lanier, its just so many great teams from the past. THAT would be great!

Do what we do with the PC version. Euroleague, FIBA, Street, NCAA, or full D-League. Add another league and incorporate it with Association.

It's a great question. IMO, I think fleshing out the other parts of the game would be great. For example, CAP. CAP is bare bones and has been for quite a while. A more robust system ala MLB the Show would be a welcomed feature. Another would be adding detail to the shoes in game to where we had more control over color combos, how away options etc. were available. Since kicks are a subculture of bball anyway - it would be a nice addition to bring even more realism to an already realistic game in so many ways.... Other than these, and the obvious "polish" of what is already there - I think they are on the right track and making gimmicky changes or bringing in too many back of the box flashy additions would be a mistake.

I'll tell you what's next (and actually waaaay overdue)... gettin online play to work as designed.
An entire day unable to complete a ranked match is completely inexcusable.

Expected, considering nba 2k's track record... but completely unacceptable.
I can't even finish a player match.
What a crock.

I would have waited to buy the game if they hadn't lied about improve the online functionality...
Because it's still broken.

I like the idea of even more classic (or memorable at least) teams being added. Gameplay wise I guess you could make it even more smoother if thats possible (this game is a beast).

The CAP is the best they have ever had, but it definitely could be better. Sneakers, accessories (can we finally be allowed to change the headband color on our own?) Can we be given more than 2 team colors or at least custom color options?

Practice mode should be better also, how about those drills they make us do in association?. How about a practice mode a la college hoops 2k8.

Real player intros is someting I know a lot of us fans would love to see. Yes some people will just button through it, but it's something I think would really add even more emersion to an already impressive pregame presentation.

3 man commentary booth. The commentary is so much better this year, but a fresh voice to an improved team of Clark and Kevin would really take it to another level I think (Reggie Miller, Chris Webber, Mike Fratello with his telestrator diagraming our plays!!!) OR how about 2 separate commentating groups, probably can't be done but we can dream can't we lol)

I can't think of anything else but if I do or if anyone wants to expand on my ideas, lets have some good convo about this.

Quite honestly, I don't see the big envelope push. I see more piles icing, as usual, although I am quite enjoying playing as my old school Bulls against other old school squads

That being said, the controls are still good enough for me as it has not progressed. Iso-motion is still just iso-motion with over-animations taking me out of the plays too much.

I much prefer what Elite 11 did with the controls as it made me feel like I was REALLY in the game, despite the other shortcomings it had. I read the interview with MW and the other guy and it was said that they have considered right stick dribbling and I believe THAT will push this series to the stratosphere, to me. If 2K can marry the 1:1 controls and r-stick dribbling with what's there to the point where the animations will actually make me feel like I am in control of what I am doing, I will lose my mind. MW KNOWS that Live 10 (and Elite 11) was onto something with the controls and this is could be why when he went back to 2K, he probably threw that idea out there of changing NBA2K's controls. I think it's the next best thing for them and we can expect it next year...hopefully...for my sake. Heh...

I know this is about NBA 2K11, but i would like to see 2k make another football game, cause I'm still playing All-pro 2k8.Maybe another all-pro football game,or maybe even College.(I'm Prayin')

please change the controls. i don't mind having a learning curve, but the isomotion curve is way too steep. the only thing i liked about live/eite were the right stick dribbling. just seems more natural. also, fix the passing for both offense and defense. i feel like i'm playing m netwok football on the atari where the defender could run backwards to appear on the other side of the screen and intercept the pass. love playing with the old school teams, though i had to update the rosters with real bench players.

That's the paradox with great products. There's always a catch-22 (look at The Show, already a terrific game but last year people started calling "stale"). My strategy would be take the best of 2K11 and add some freshness. Keep the fundamentals as they are, they work and people are happy but give us more than just 2K11.5.

Amen but I doubt they would reveal anything if that would cause a 'frenzy'
only to be disappointed later on. It would be nice to find out that they're secretly working on something.

The game is far from a masterpiece. It's very sluggish. Online is a wreck again. Maybe if your in your basement playing by your self it's a masterpiece but online right now it's terrible. The controls and dribbling have gotten worse each year since 2k8. Spin moves are back in fashion like it's 2k9.
