Chris' NBA Elite 11 Demo Impressions Stuck
Posted on September 21, 2010 at 06:21 PM.

Wow.

I'm not sure what to say about NBA Elite 11, and that speechlessness doesn't have to do with the game being great.

I've spent the afternoon playing the demo some, thinking what I was playing was an aberration, but at this point it's becoming very clear: NBA Elite 11 is a resounding and very clear step backwards from NBA Live 10.

Name an area of the game, and it feels like it has taken a step backwards. The game doesn't play nearly as smooth, the controls are potentially revolutionary but really they're just going to end up being a bad attempt to emulate the success of NHL's controls, even the graphics are a clear step behind last year's NBA Live.

I actually feel bad for Kevin Durant being put on the cover of the game.

The control scheme has potentially revolutionary aspects to it, but I think these controls will ultimately go the same direction as the vision cone: hotly debated and ultimately toned down or scrapped altogether. Yes, having this much control is refreshing, but the controls are also geared towards stick skills people. A few tweaks to the ideas behind the control, perhaps meeting NBA 2K in the middle in terms of analog controls, would probably go a long way for the survivability of the controls.

As they stand right now, the controls are going to be very polarizing. People who are good on the sticks will love them, people who aren't will loathe them. As for me, I think the idea was good but the execution seems to be off and with time, I think more people will agree with that sentiment.

However, where the game really falls flat is where it matters: realism. Player movement on the court is decidedly sluggish and it's not fluid at all. If you aren't moving, neither are your teammates for the most part. Correct player spacing, jockeying for position: none of it is in NBA Elite.

Shooting seems a mixed bag with the controls. I like the idea behind shooting, but I think it's going to ultimately either limit or give no restrictions to offense. Someone who is good on the sticks might not miss a shot, I doubt it'll happen....but I won't be surprised to hear about it. Shot variety seems to be miss or swish, hardly any middle ground. That's not good at all.

Passing is jerky, as are animations. It really feels like the game is very static and moving from step a to step b at any given point. There's no real dynamics to it.

As things stand right now, roughly one week to release, there is literally no reason to consider NBA Elite 11 for your NBA gaming. NBA 2K does a better job at almost everything, and in most areas, the two games aren't even close. In my opinion, Elite 11 is a title that was best left unreleased. The Elite experiment is a multi-year process and EA would've done themselves a favor by making sure the game was ready for prime time by giving the guys an extra year.

I don't fault the developers for this, they were dealing with the equivalent of the Clippers organization hiring a new coach, trading the entire roster for undrafted practice squad members, and then being expected to deliver a championship team. They didn't have a chance here. The fault here lies with the people up the corporate food chain who decided to give unrealistic demands to a development team which was already battling from behind. As it stands, Elite 11 will most likely do the brand irreparable harm.

Unless of course the suits at EA were going for the irony factor with the name NBA Elite, then I completely understand their intentions.

@cbass1 -- I'd love to do one better and get him on the OS Radio show. But you know, no guarantees there

This game and series just needs to die like Triple play did and just start over completely.

i would love to ask EA... since when is a "full fourth quarter" 5 minutes?...,

anyone have a link where EA or the developers respond to all the negativity i would love to see this, but cant find it anywhere

I totally agree with this article.

EA should retire the game until they put themselves together. They still have NBA Jam, they could sell it for 20 dollar on PSN/Live.
Chris what`s more exciting: play Elite11 or chase a storm?

I was whole heartedly looking forward to Elite, and I totally agree with the above after 5 or 6 games on the demo.
Im not a 2k fan as I'm pretty ****** NBA gamer and I always thought Live10 was more exciting and accessible. After not paying any attention to any previews and hype about this year's releases I have just registered to say this in the hope that the snr dev team / EA marketing might find it.

Take NBA live 10 and put the control sceme in it as an optional extra and Elite will work. The only fixes from Live10 I can think of right now is the 2v2 teamate passing (always pass to yourself??!!), some extra commentary and some general AI and in game animation tweaks.
This whole start from scratch idea was a bad move as it feels and looks like NBA07 or worse (i always thought 2k looked poor, but this is ...worse). The only way it will work is by releasing it when its ready, this code needs another years work at least.

After playing both demos I will only be buying PES11 this year, lol.

Thanks for Live10, looking forward to Elite 12.

You certainly have some valid criticism in your blog which has been echoed by others in the forum. We want to fix these things as much as you do, believe me. And don't worry, I don't take anything you've said personally.

I do strongly believe though that Elite offers gamers something different, and although it may not shine in some areas that you consider critical for an NBA basketball game, it does shine in other areas that many gamers feel have been neglected over the years.

It is certainly turning out to be a polarizing game, no doubt about that.

So toy your statement: "As things stand right now, roughly one week to release, there is literally no reason to consider NBA Elite 11 for your NBA gaming."

I would respond by saying that there are reasons to consider elite.

-if you want to have complete control over the success/failure of your actions in the game (shooting, stealing, blocking, etc) then Elite is for you

-if you want to take that level of control and play through the career of an NBA player of your creation, where your skill and knowledge determine his success/failure, then Elite is for you

-if you want to take you new found skills and compete in a virtual 5v5 basketball league online, then Elite is for you

-if you just want to try a different take on the sport of basketball represented as a video game, then Elite is for you

I'm sure there are many other examples I can give, but these things are not offered by any other basketball game this year.

So to say there is no reason to consider NBA Elite this year is a little unfair.

There may not be any reason for you to consider it, and while that is certainly unfortunate, it does not necessarily mean the same thing hold true for every body else.

you know what

I love the Elite's control setup, and how its possible to nail a fade away J with Kobe by calmly pressing up on the right stick. For once its all about controller discipline.

But, what 2K offers that Elite lacks is gameplay depth, 2K offers much much more (you've all seen Czar's new 2K vids). The revamped iso motion, ill admit I still havent figured out, but its seems like once learned properly, almost anything with Superstar level players is possible. The controls may not be as smooth as Elite, but they seem to offer a wider variety of moves.

Once Elite learns gameplay 'discipline' I think they will have a serious shot to over 2K as THE basketball powerhouse

@rEanimator -- Good solid points on your front for sure man. No arguing those. I should've prefaced that more with, 'for the guys looking for a complete sim experience there's no reason.'

With time Elite is going to come around, I have no doubts about that.

Well written. I am glad you didn't just focus on the controls. Although I like the new controls, I think many opinions surrounding the bashing of the demo stems from the controls when the classic controls are available.

My only issues with your blog is to state that the game shouldn't be sold. I understand that everyone wants a NBA title to be 100% simulation. Because a game may not be a true sim doesn't necessarily mean that the game won't be fun.

Honestly, I am not one to sit and watch players off the ball movements. I understand that it is a nuance of the game and that there is a difference when it comes to 2K11 in this regard. If people want to bash this game because of off the ball movement, let some guy post his videos on YouTube (as they do with Madden every year) and show the world how unrealistic a video game is. Because a game doesn't truly emulate each specific aspect doesn't mean the game will not be fun. I don't even know how people even enjoy games any more. Based on what I read in the forums and blogs, more people spend time trying to find every little thing wrong with a game instead of just sitting down and playing.

I understand people's expectations but let's keep things in perspective. These are games. Games aren't always going to emulate life 100% and not every sports title is going to make everyone happy.

Again, I understand expectations but people are making this game out to be the worst ever made. NBA Live 06 and 07 were terrible not because of court spacing and controls but because the game was unplayable, mostly due to the camera. In my opinion, Elite is far from that. Even if Elite is considered "arcade-like" that doesn't equate to a poor game.

I have played both demos and I pretty much agree 100% with these impressions.

The Elite 11 demo feels like an alpha-build of a concept-game, not a 1-week-until-release kind of product....

NBA Elite11 is the best basketball game to come out.

I've been playing more with the controls and I don't hate them...I don't hate EA either but the game falls short in a lot of places. EA should have used this new control technique on something like NBA street. Again I like the use of the controls but wish the game had more to offer as far as authenticity and realism.

I've found that all the reasons posted by rEanimator you can also do in 2K. I'm not trying to make this a vs. type thing, but I 2K you can do all of those things, not to mention all their modes seem to be more in depth, especially with My Player and Association. And rEanimator talked about taking your guy into a 5 on 5 league well in 2K you can do that too, but what about those guys who don't have live who only play against the CPU. I have heard any thing about updates to the AI and that's what stands out A LOT when playing 2K's DEMO. I played the Elite demo a little more and I don't completely hate it, but after playing 2K's demo, I'll be buying it and passing on Elite this year.
