If done and approached proprely.
lets look at the these sports Football, basketball, baseball. All great sports to play in a virtual world. As gamers (hardcore); what is the first and foremost thing/feature that we crave? ans: Awesome gameplay, adds to replay value; Stunning graphics, to make your jaw drop; and tons of Customization, for you to immerse yourself into the game.
Now lets look at the games that gave us at least 2 out of the 3 listed above. The first one that came to mind was NBA 2K11; sweet graphics, and generous gameplay, with the modes that where presented in the game on release. On the minus (for my sake) was the lack of customization beyond create a player with the Draft. There just wasnt anything to create.
Madden12; lacked gameplay, and had No customization what-so-ever; and the graphics, as EA wants to call it an overhaul of the 3D grass, which you only got to see on replays, blew chunks out of my butt. But EA Sports still sold a crap load of this game primarily on namesake alone. (IMO)
The last game that comes to my mind quickly was, MLB11 The Show. hands down had the gameplay, if you could get past and understand the controls of the game. Did i mention that is was also a very long game to play! Graphically, the game looked incredible (PS3, what else can you say). Now, customization is where the game took alittle hit, as there was nothing more than just baseball, and create your player, and take them up through the farm leagues, to get a chance at the big show.
now there where some other games i could have mentioned but they seem to have a grazed the 3 criteria for; graphics, gameplay, and customization, and are not in any trouble of throwing in the towel as of yet: FIFA, and EA's NHL series.
If a company/developer wants to hit one out of the park; they need to have beautiful graphics, amazing gameplay, that makes you wanting and coming back for more; and a ridiculous amount of customization that a gamer would leave his partner for! i would have said girlfriend, but i wanted to be politically correct.
customization could be the key here; as if you were to have a little big planet approach in the creation of things; sports games would grow so tiresome soo quickly anymore. i know most of you will say, " that's why they release DLC, you noob..", but it just isnt the same when your tired of a game and then they release something that may or may not bring you back to the game later. That's like eating a cold turkey sandwhich a week after Thanksgiving; it just doesnt have the same flare as a nice hot Thanksgiving dinner the day of, with family and friends around to enjoy it with you. i hope you got my point. If not, that ship has sailed, just like that bus you missed yesterday; IT"S GONE FEELING.
So these companies need to think harder, and figure out ways to increase customization into future games; it can be done on these next gen consoles; they just need to have the right leadership, and development to do so.
