After The Week 14 Storm
Posted on December 14, 2010 at 06:02 PM.

Fantasy Football fanatics love mock drafts and projections. So I decided to do some research around the early 2010 season player projections. What I found was that some of the players that were expected to do great are just doing ok. Some of the players that were picked deep into some drafts are doing amazing. Here is a look at what the top 10 looked like in august, before the season started:

1. TEN - RB Chris Johnson
2. MIN - RB Adrian Peterson
3. JAX - RB Maurice Jones Drew
4. BAL - RB Ray Rice
5. STL - RB Steve Jackson
6. SF - RB Frank Gore
7. HOU - WR Andre Johnson
8. ATL - RB Michael Turner
9. NOS - QB Drew Brees
10. NE, MIN, TEN - WR Randy Moss

As you can see, these were clearly supposed to be some of the top Fantasy Football players. Where are they now?

1. Chris Johnson (8th Ranked RB – Was Ranked #1 in most Top 200 list)
Due to injuries and bad play, the Titans have had a horrible season. Teams have been able to concentrate on stopping the run and Chris Johnson’s statistics have been a casualty of that. He has still been productive. He just has not equaled last season’s totals or shown that he merits a number one pick.

2. Adrian Peterson (5th Ranked RB - Was Ranked #2 in most Top 200 list)
Here is another player that was supposed to erupt this season. What happened? Again, it all has to do with the fact that the NFL is a team sport and the Vikings offense has not been effective. The Vikings have tried to concentrate on the run but because of poor quarterback and receiver play, teams have been able to concentrate on stopping Adrian Peterson. Like Chris Johnson he has still been productive, but not close to the early season projections.

3. Maurice Jones Drew (2nd Ranked RB - Was Ranked #3 in most Top 200 list)
MJD has become the MVP of the Jacksonville Jaguars the last few weeks. He has been described as a bowling ball with legs, and even though he has not scored many touchdowns he has averaged 100 yards per game this season.

4. Ray Rice (13th Ranked RB - Was Ranked #4 in most Top 200 list)
Ray would have to have some unbelievable numbers in the last few weeks to even match what he did last season. Injuries and the propensity of the Ravens to pass more, have caused this top tier RB to drop.

5. Steve Jackson (8th Ranked RB - Was Ranked #5 in most Top 200 list)
The Rams have been a big surprise this season and they owe it all to their workhorse Steve Jackson and rookie QB Sam Bradford. Jackson has been playing strong all season, and he is sure to up his TD total from last season. Jackson has not dropped much from where he was projected.

6. Frank Gore (15th Ranked RB on IR - Was Ranked #6 in most Top 200 list)
Gore will not equal his totals from last season, that makes him a total Fantasy Football bust. Early on he was ranked #6 out of 200, clearly not the statistics that had been expected by many. To some GM’s surprise it wasn’t just the injuries. The 49ers have been very inconsistent all season, and that allowed teams to stop their number one weapon Frank Gore.

7. Andre Johnson (3rd Ranked WR - Was Ranked #7 in most Top 200 list)
Andre had a great game against the Ravens this past week. He has had a few nagging injuries this season, but he has stilled played very well. Johnson is probably the most consistent WR in Fantasy Football

8. Michael Turner (4th Ranked RB - Was Ranked #8 in most Top 200 list)
The Falcons have one the most balanced offenses in the NFL and Turner is a big part of it. He has exceeded is early on projections and continues to get better every week. With the Falcons in the hunt to get to the Super Bowl, Turner will be great in the Fantasy Football playoffs.

9. Drew Brees (3rd Ranked QB - Was Ranked #9 in most Top 200 list)
When the season begun it looked like Brees was going to have a post Super Bowl slump. Luckily for the Saints there has been a complete turnaround. Brees has been playing extremely well as of late. He has the Saints on a role, and even though he is not the #1 quarterback as Tom Brady has a strangle hold on that honor, the #3 spot suits him well

10. Randy Moss (13th Ranked RB - Was Ranked #10 in most Top 200 list)
There is really nothing positive that can be said about Randy Moss’s Fantasy Football season. Projected to be a Top 10 player he has not played anywhere near those projections. Instead Randy has been traded and released this season. Worst of all, he has 6 receptions in the last 6 weeks

Now what players have been great Fantasy Football surprises?

1. Matt Cassel - 24 TD’s, 4 Interceptions
2. Arian Foster – 1330 yards rushing, 13 TD’s
3. Darren McFadden – 993 yards rushing, 7 TD’s
4. Ahmad Bradshaw – 1116 yards rushing, 8 TD’s
5. Roddy White – 99 receptions, 1219 yards receiving, 7 TD’s
6. Brandon Lloyd – 1185 yards receiving, 9 TD’s
7. Dwayne Bowe – 888 yards receiving, 14 TD’s

So when you start working on your drafting strategy for next season remember this article and don’t believe the hype.
