Weekly Fantasy Football take on a positive and a negative after the Sunday NFL games - December 07, 2010

Positive

For a few Fantasy Football seasons there have been grumblings about how the Tight end position has become obsolete. The argument has been that there are never enough TE’s to go around. Well we are here to let you know that they are back and here to stay.

TE’s are not just blockers anymore. They are legitimate pass receivers and touchdown catchers. Just take a glance at some of the games this weekend. Five TE’s led there teams in receptions and one of them Vernon Davis had an unbelievable game. His statistics on Sunday (4 receptions, 126 yards and 1 touchdown) versus the Packers were better than most receivers. As we continue on the west coast we can take a look how well the San Diego Chargers Tight end has played. Antonio Gates has been injured during the season and he has still been able to produce great statistics. His statistics for the season (782 yards, 10 touchdowns) have been outstanding. Another Tight end having a great fantasy season is Marcedes Lewis in Jacksonville (8 touchdowns).

What do these statistics tell us? That the TE position is a great position to have in your fantasy league. It keeps the league closer to what we see in the NFL and it forces Fantasy GM’s to be even more strategical while they make their picks during the Fantasy Football Draft.

Top Fantasy Tight Ends as of Week 13:

1. Antonio Gates
2. Vernon Davis
3. Marcedes Lewis
4. Jason Witten
5. Dustin Keller
6. Todd Heap
7. Aaron Hernandez
8. Tony Gonzalez
9. Brandon Pettigrew
10. Ben Watson

Negative

Unfortunately the FF regular season is coming to a close. That however, is not the negative up for discussion here today. The issue at hand is one that has impacted the league as recently as the ‘09-‘10 seasons and one that may be affecting FF Leagues across the board. What exactly are we talking about? Well, here at Busted Play Sports we like to call it "throwing in the towel". Let me explain: A GM's season is cut short, he's not made the playoffs, what now? In a show of unsportsmanlike conduct the GM decides to no longer submit competitive lineups. Why? To improve his odds at the upcoming FF Draft.

Some may not see a problem with this, but the truth is this is an issue that involves ethics, morals and integrity. So what is a FF Commish to do? Let's take a look at what the NFL Commissioner did.

In an effort to preserve a sense of competitive integrity amongst the teams, the NFL has scheduled games in the regular seasons so that more division games are played at the end of the regular season. This new scheduling change has been very effective at keeping the excitement alive as we witness a more competitive and rivalry driven regular season. Now the question begs, what can be done at the FF League level to achieve the same results?

Well, for starters... the commissioner should take the initiative (perhaps at the Draft) to emphasize to all GM’s the importance of integrity. An owner that is only active until their teams are eliminated is a hindrance to the success of your FF League. They should be making owners around the league aware that not submitting competitive lineups to better their chances of a better draft pick will not be tolerated. You might be asking yourself "why is this such a big deal?" To get right down to it, this type of unethical owner is dangerous due to the effect they can have on the competitive balance of your league. Bottom line is they will skew the outcome of the season and manipulate the outcome of the Draft.

While every GM wants to "win it all" they should be reminded that their decisions can negatively impact the quality and competitive spirit of their host FF League. If the commissioner provides the necessary awareness around the league and is proactive at reaching out to such potential ruthless owners, and still the behavior continues, then perhaps it is time to sever ties with such owners. Enough negative on the negative, hope you have a great FF week.
