Did I Just Miss Greatest Ending To A World Series Game EVER?
Posted on October 28, 2011 at 09:55 AM.
Just before I leave for work each morning I check my emails via my cell phone and by reading an email, ironically from a thread that I subscribe to from operationsports.com, I learn that they’ll be a game 7 in the World Series tonight. WTF! I quickly turn on the television and tune into ESPN to confirm what I am reading is real. Sure enough the ticker is displaying game 7 World Series related info. Again I say WTF! I was falling asleep on the couch watching game 6…..good game…great series….late back to back jacks by the Rangers had me saying this game is over but being a Mets fan I realize that no game is ever over until you get that last out. At this point it’s 7-4 Rangers, Berkman is about to lead off the bottom of the 8th and I have to get up early in the morning for work. I already have been up since 4:30 am eastern and can not keep my eyes open as it’s past 11:00 pm already. I tell myself if Berkman gets on I’ll continue watching but of course he makes out and that’s it, I’m shot, I turn off the TV and hit the sack. When I learned how the Cardinals came back to win the game I come to realize I missed quite possibly the greatest ending to a World Series game EVER! WTF! And I missed it literally by seconds as there was quite a bit of drama in the bottom of the 8th inning. Had I gotten a drink of water before heading upstairs, taken a leak, anything to keep the TV on just a little longer…..maybe just maybe I would have been fortunate to witness the end of this game live. Now I will have to resign myself to the fact that I’ll have to watch a replay knowing the ending. Not the same affect. MLB has to…..has to do something about these games going late into the night. Worse than me missing the end of the game is the fact that my boys missed it. Of course they’ll never get a chance to watch the end of any World Series games because they are in bed before 10:00 pm. If it were the Mets I may have allowed them to stay up to 11:00 pm even though it was a school night but even if they were allowed to stay up that late they would easily have fallen asleep trying to watch. It truly is a shame that very few young baseball fans (and older ones like myself) did not get to experience a game that may only come around once in a generation. MLB has to do something….start the games earlier, have fewer commercials in between innings, have weekend day games, I am not sure what the answer is because obviously everything is driven by the fact MLB and the networks want to generate as much revenue as possible. But in doing so they are hurting themselves in the long term. Football doesn’t have this issue and I will say it is great experience to watch the past few Super Bowls with friends and family that have come down to dramatic finishes. Unfortunately my only solution may be to move out to the left coast.
