3 things learned in 2012-2013 NBA SEASON (Recap)
Posted on June 23, 2013 at 09:13 PM.
This year, the NBA gave us the excitement and entertainment we wanted (As usual). This NBA season gave us an insight of what the future holds in basketball with both players and teams. The past, current, and future generations were presented in full picture this year. These are the lessons learned from this year's NBA season.

Lesson One: There is nobody even close to LeBron James right now

LeBron has been dominant for a while, but it seemed like this year he ended any possible discussions for who is the best in the NBA. Let's start off with the fact that he went 57% from the field this year. Shooting 50% is great, but he upped that by 7% while averaging 27 points per game. He was finally able to end the talks about him not being clutch, making a number of clutch plays this season. I personally do feel that Kevin Durant is the better scorer, but as an overall player nobody in the league is close to LeBron right now

Lesson Two: Kevin Durant may be overrated.

Before the playoffs, KD was having another routine dominant year. He was second in scoring and was also shooting over 50%. Once the playoffs came around, things changed and my perspective on Kevin Durant drastically changed. Russell Westbrook got injured and it seemed to expose Kevin Durant's weaknesses. In the Houston series he did still dominate, but you could see some of the problems in his game. He tried to be a facilitator at the wrong times and a scorer at the wrong times as well. Triple teamed, he would shoot. Single coverage, he would pass. Memphis was able to slow down KD and won the series. Russell Westbrook's value went way up after these playoffs.

Lesson Three: Leaving generation, Current generation, and Next generation

The generations seemed to be divided this year. Up and coming generations had their moments this year to show their future. This includes Kyrie Irving, Damian Lillard, Paul George, Kawhi Leonard James Harden and many more. The current generation is proving to be dominant, as Carmelo Anthony dominated and LeBron James won the championship. Finally the leaving generation seemed to show too. Kobe tore his achilles, making us wonder how much he has left. Jason Kidd retired, same as Jerry Stackhouse, in what seems to be a line of players moving out of the NBA.

Conclusion The NBA is going to be at it's best the next 3 years

Every team seems to have a dominant player in some way. EVERY TEAM (Ok, maybe not Charlotte still). It seems like the problem is fixed with players coming together to form super teams like the Miami Heat. In the next few years, players like James Harden will start to dominate more, as well as others. The 'KOBE' generation is going out, and the 'LEBRON' generation is still young enough to be dominant while these young players can give a good challenge to them. The future is bright for the NBA. And one more thing, David Stern is gone next year . The future is VERY bright.

Nice write up. I agree that KD isn't close to Bron's level right now. However, I don't know if calling him possibly overrated is fair. It was a very unfortunate situation and they really needed Harden in that series. It does improve Westbrook's value, but I don't know if it hurts Durant all that much. He's still young.

Yea that's the one thing, he has so much room to improve because he's still young, but the hype coming into the hear and during the year was Kevin Durant vs LeBron James, and it seems KD has left that spot to challenge LeBron and it is open to others

I try to tell my local College ball fans that the NBA is the real deal. As you said, the next three years should see all that potential the Association has had for decades finally be realized.
The League is truly growing, becoming it's best. It's a Show we don't want to miss. BTW, I predict that the NBA will replace the NFL as America's game over the next ten years.

good article.
Durant isn't overrated. This Just proves that a championship contender needs more than an elite player. Teams need that 1b or borderline elite player to contend. History dictates this. Why would this year be any different.
The upcoming draft and free agency period will also be very interesting.
Who will Miami bring in, on the cheap. who will get amnestied?
There are a lot of players that will be taking huge pay cuts this off season at every position. There are a lot of good names on the free agent list.

thanks tril, Durant you do need more than one person to win a championship, but people have been saying the Westbrook is a cancer to the team, then he gets injured, and KD is not able to show how great he is. Jimbo614, I agree the NBA is growing especially in the next few years, but i don't think it will be better than the NFL. I like basketball more, but for some reason there's too much love in football in America. Even here in Canada everybody loves football.

I agree on the whiner and flopper part and that they do get favoured by the league. To say he's NO WHERE NEAR the likes of Jordan, Magic, and even Kobe is ridiculous. With Jordan and Magic i can agree that he's not there yet but it can be argued he's already there, and in general he is at their talent level. Now with Kobe Bryant, that's wrong. I would even argue that LeBron is slightly higher than Kobe's level. The only category where Kobe beats LeBron is scoring, and even there LeBron is elite. Every other category basically LeBron's. If you watch him play a lot he gives up a lot of scoring opportunities to pass the ball. LeBron could of had a higher scoring number in his previous years if he didn't focus on passing
