The voting for the NBA All-star game needs to change. Yesterday the starters were announced for the teams. On the East, it's Rondo, D-wade, King James, Melo, and KG. On the West, it's CP3, Kobe, Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin, and Dwight Howard. D-wade should not be starting as there have been other guards doing better than him such as Kyrie Irving or Jrue Holiday. Kevin Garnett shouldn't be on the team all together. A player like Joakim Noah or Tyson Chandler were robbed of their spot. On the West, you can argue that Blake Griffin and Dwight Howard shouldn't have made it either. The Memphis Grizzlies frontcourt has been exceptional this year and both Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol could be starting. Serge Ibaka is another name that comes to mind. All this leads to one question. Should the All-star voting format change. As well as another question. How would you change it?
Overruling ability by David Stern or Players Association
A player like Kevin Garnett this year should not even be mentioned in the All Star conversation. Kevin Garnett is not having a good year and the Celtics are also not having a great year either. He's not even the best forward on the team right now, but he is still starting in the All-Star game. A situation like when Allen Iverson was named a starter in the All star game a few years back, when he was hardly playing or playing well, as well as when Yao Ming was named an all star even though he was clearly injured. The ability for David Stern to say that a player can not be in starting lineup would be a great opportunity to get the real deserving players an all star shot. If a clear non deserving all star like Kevin Garnett is selected, David Stern or even the Players Assocation should be able to remove that player and either pick or ask fans to pick again for that one particular starter.
Players only Vote
NBA players are the number 1 scouts for who deserves to be an all star. The league could ask every player who their lineup would be based on what they feel. They've had to guard many players and know which players are deserving of an all star spot. Players like LeBron or Melo will still be picked because players in the league know it is difficult to guard those players and know how amazing they are. If not complete players vote, at least let the players have a larger weight factor when it comes to voting. Their votes make more sense than 80 % of the votes by the fans.
The League Selects Starters
This is the one option that nobody wants to see. Not really for the fact that their scared that their favourite players won't make it, but the fact that David Stern and co. are choosing. No matter what David Stern does, the fans will hate it. He's made his mistakes, but even when he makes great decisions, which he has, us fans seem to criticize him continuously. The league would pick the appropriate players that deserve their chance as they won't pick based on favouring.
The NBA has many fans all over the world, but i'm pretty sure many of them wouldn't mind the voting process of the all star game get changed. Many fans have expressed their displeasure with players like KG getting an all star spot over someone who deserves it like Joakim Noah. If the voting weight can at least change so the fans have less power, it would help tremendously.
