NBA 2K13- Steps stop NBA Live 13 comeback
Posted on July 11, 2012 at 10:57 PM.
This year in basketball gaming might possibly be the most important one. The NBA Live series is making a comeback after their forgettable attempt at 'delivering revolutionary gameplay' with NBA Elite 11. Most basketball sim fans are now NBA 2K fans, after losing almost all respect for the NBA Live series. NBA Live 13 needs to deliver and hope NBA 2K13 does not. In order for NBA Live to keep their sales, they have to make 3 key improvements.

STEP 1: Improve main weaknesses in Online and Passing

NBA 2K's passing and online have brought in the most complaints from gamers. It is almost impossible to play one game without a problem online as it has even gotten worse from 2K11-2K12, and the passing has been sluggish for a while as well. I cannot give advice for online improvement because sometimes it is the opponents fault for bad online gaming (pausing the game often, trying to make you quit, trolling etc.), and the online connectivity is something the 2K team needs to figure out. The passing can be fixed by making the ball travel faster on passes and also making the game understand what the better pass is if the pass is being directed in the line of two players at different distances. Things like openness and player's strength's should be incorporated in the passing logic. If the NBA 2K franchise wants to be the greatest, it has to what their 2 year cover man Michael Jordan did to become the greatest, work on their weaknesses.

Step 2: Increase gameplay advantage against NBA Live even more

This is NBA 2K's strength. This is where NBA Live has struggled for years. This is where the NBA 2K team can deliver the knockout blow. As impressive as NBA 2K's gameplay is, there is always something they can change for the better of the game. Things like making blocks feel more realistic, modifying animation dunk ons, increasing variety of layups, dunks, alley oops and crossovers. Even though these small details may not be as important to others, these small details are almost the only thing gameplay wise that they have not perfected. Right now the game feels equal when it comes to the perimeter game and the post game when it comes to player domination, but the post game feels more realistic. If there can be an improvement in realism in the perimeter game with the small details I explained above, the balance will be there, giving another amazing gameplay experience filled with improvements that are noticeable.

Step 3: Continue adding extra features in the game

Last year, NBA 2K upgraded the Jordan Challenge with the NBA's Greatest game mode, letting you play with 15 of the greatest players who ever played in with authentic broadcasting in whatever time period you are in. That's probably the main mode or feature people think about when it comes to new features. What people probably don't think about is the fact that NBA 2K12 let you customize Nike and Jordan Brand shoes with NIKE ID, had bench players for all classic teams, and the My Player improvements such being able to only play key games so you can possibly finish your career. Those extra features are what made NBA 2K12 a success. If they can continue to add more, that will be a huge add-on to NBA 2K13. These features are all things that people aren't expecting and isn't necessarily needed, but adding them is also adding on buyers for the game.

Improving their weaknesses, continuing their gameplay dominance, and also adding extra features is the minimum NBA 2K13 needs when it comes to completely knocking the NBA Live series out of the basketball sim world. Unless NBA Live comes out with one of the best basketball video games of all time, which is highly unlikely, these 3 steps can put NBA Live right back down again. It's time for NBA 2K13 to bring the bully mentality to NBA Live 13 by not letting the franchise get back on their feet again

Thanks for the comments. I really don't want to knock NBA Live out of the sim world, as shown in my other blog giving NBA Live tips on how to come back, this is just showing if 2k were to knock NBA Live off, this is how they would do it. Just like in the other blog, if NBA Live were to make a comeback, this is how they would do it. I am also not a fan of 2K(I play it because it's the only basketball sim available) I was first a NBA Live player and have always wished that they stayed number 1, just wished they would of kept producing the same gameplay back to the XBOX/PS2 days (even though I find NBA Live 09, 10 not too bad lol). I don't want one basketball video game, I really want to see two or more in NBA and in college, this blog and the other are just what both franchises need to do

I don't understand the whole reasoning behind if you like a game you're a "fanboy" of that company alone. Is 2k perfect, not by far. Online is an issue and passing can be better. I actually found that the sliders help to make the passing top notch if you try them. I've been playing bball games since Double Dribble when I was 6 years old and I was a huuuuge fan of NBA Live back on the genesis. But as things evolved and it became more than just a video game, expectations rose for it to be an actual basketball simulation. To me that's where Live struggled. I remember the arcade dunk fests from the early 2000's and how things got way out of hand when the analog dribbling came in. Meanwhile 2k, from the beginning, showed flashes of real simulation basketball. Up until the mid 2000's I used to by both because I loved the features, jerseys and shoes of Live, but the gameplay and graphics of 2k. Then when the current gen came out it seems 2k made a leap in features and presentation (still below Live at first), while maintaining being a true sim. Live struggled out the gates with a stripped down game and really didn't catch a stride in my opinion until Live 10.

When I played the demo of Live 10 I thought the graphics were amazing in the practice shoot around/intro to the game, but once the ball was tipped it seemed like things went from gorgeous to "arcadey" rapidly. The gameplay was decent at best, but the animations were terrible. Meanwhile 2k10 had it's issues to me, but it was clearly all around a better game than Live. What's the point of having stable online if the game is crappy? That can't be your selling point. I did however think Live nailed the commentary and crowd atmosphere with 10.

Then 2k11 dropped and EA decided to scrape everything they built for 3 to 4 years and start over. The rest is history. 2k put out Thriller while EA did whatever Jermaine Jackson did when Mike was moonwalking and dancing with zombies. I'm a paying customer with no loyalty to any company. My only loyalty in this is to my wallet and time. EA most certainly has the capital and resources to one day establish itself in the basketball genre again. They just need a real plan and dedicate themselves fully to sim gamers or casual gamers. 2k decided to go sim for a decade and it paid off and brought the casual people too. EA has a lot of the auxiliary parts right (shoes, jerseys, FIBA, all star weekend, online), but what good is rims, bose system, tint, TVs and exhaust if the car doesn't run right?

I agree competition is ALWAYS the best thing to have in games. That's why MLB 2k continues to suck, football games are stale and boxing is a yawn. 2k beat out Live when they finally took a page out of Live's book and added features on top of sim basketball (legends, my player, shoes, jerseys, horse etc), now it's time for Live to steal their playbook and 1 up them.

*buy both
sorry for the error and long read

haha thanks for the comment. In my opinion, I think casual fans might be bringing the quality of sim gaming down. The companies obviously want sales, so they try to make their games more accessible to the casual fan. It brings the strategy out of the game and makes the game more unrealistic. Also, i'm really hoping Live uses their power and resources to become the top game between the two games. I've always felt that NBA Live is for real gamers, and NBA 2K is for arcade gamers, even though 2K has been coming out with better overall games, in my opinion, technically, their not as realistic as NBA Live's games even in the 360/PS3 era

WOW I have to 100% disagree with you. With Live, on the hardest levels, I've always been able to dribble dunk, fast break dunk, pump fake dunk--- with my centers agains the fastest point guards lol. 2k was always the game where you HAD to use strategy on the hardest level and now it's to the point where experienced 2k gamers don't even touch the hardest levels. You have to run plays, get back on defense and work to get great shots to combat the relentless CPU. I would buy both because Live would offer FIBA, dunk contest, more jerseys and more shoes. But 2k got smart and added these things. You don't have to take my word, look at the reality. Once 2k did that, EA had to scrap their game and try to reinvent it. That didn't work so they're trying to go back to the old way and that doesn't seem to work either. Hard to argue who's better or who's winning when the other guy is on the ground and the ref is at 9 and he's still looking for his mouthpiece lol.

lol it's true NBA Live has it's flaws, but when I play 2k, if I really want to, I can just play unrealistic and destroy the CPU. I remember I had NBA Live 09(I can't explain but it ended up being on of my favourite games lol), you couldn't play unrealistic because the game basically wouldn't let you, there was nothing I unrealistic I could use to beat the CPU. The defenders will take your passes away if you really try to thread the needle at a stupid time, while in 2K those passes can go and you can even throw alley oops out of nowhere and the player will do a pump reverse. Little things like that frustrate me, a reverse pump alley oop in traffic, you don't even see that in the NBA, only Vince Carter has done that. It's the little things that make me feel that 2K is more unrealistic. With NBA Live really using the ESPN broadcast advantage, i'm excited to see if they can come out with a good realistic game. It would feel like your really watching a game. follow my twitter btw https://twitter.com/Nba2kNbalive

Have you used any of the slider sets available for 2k?? I can agree with some of what you're saying on default levels, but NONE of these games are super realistic out of the box. Once you tweak the sliders, the animations and gameplay in 2k are unmatched on this generation. EA should not try to reinvent the wheel. Just steal from 2k like they stole from you. EA should do that with Madden as well. No shame in taking what people loved from 2k5 and making it better in Madden.

If 2K will fix their problems and Live makes a decent comeback, then we all win. Until then, I'll continue to play 2K11....best basketball game period..IMO

I for one am proud to be 2kSports fanboy!!!
I have no issues claiming allegian. Theyve delivered on every verison of NBA 2k, they delivered with College basketball, and theyve delivered the best football sim of all time NFL2k5.
Baseball is enjoyable (its not the Show), and the NHL franchise was decent also.
Im not knocking EA with my comment, but when it comes to NBA gaming, I role with 2k, and Im proud to say that!!!

followed back.... I don't really like using sliders because one time I tried it with either this year's game or 2K11 and it didn't do anything, and I agree that madden should take things from NFL 2K5, the franchise is over and there is no point of being to prideful using your own ideas to make a better game. Playing 2K11 again I noticed it is the best game of all time too. I personally haven't tried the baseball game, but I heard it's awful haha no offence.

Not much really to elaborate on with this other than competition is needed. I always played the EA Basketball sims (Live, NCAA) because the gameplay was more realistic, more strategy was required and controls are better than the 2k games. But I do feel like even though I never touch 2k games (sorry haters), We (the gamers) need both EA and 2K in order to drive each other to be better each year. It only helps us all in the end.

2k imo was always better..but comp is the way to go.
