Why This year's NBA Finals May be One of the Greatest of All Time
Posted on June 11, 2012 at 07:58 PM.
For years we have seen NBA Finals with great team play, but no real interesting one on one battles compared to this year's Finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Miami Heat. The matchup between Kevin Durant and LeBron James may be one of the best of all time. We haven't seen a MVP vs runner-up MVP matchup since Michael Jordan vs Clyde Drexler in the 1992 NBA Finals(we all know what happened here). Looking back at that series, there is no reason why this series can't live up to 1992 series or even be better.

Kevin Durant vs LeBron James

LeBron James is one of the most gifted players of all time. He can score from anywhere, he's a facilitator, and he's a good defender. Kevin Durant on the other hand can score from anywhere as well and outscore LeBron on any given day, but his passing ability is behind LeBron's and his defence is just off Lebron's. Who should have been MVP, that's all about opinion(I was personally going for Kevin Durant), but you can say the same thing about the 1991-1992 year. Many believed Clyde Drexler should have been MVP, but Michael Jordan received it, and he certainly showed why he deserved it. This series will show indeed who deserved the MVP

Serge Ibaka vs Chris Bosh

With Chris Bosh recovering from injury, you can expect Serge Ibaka to take advantage. Serge Ibaka is not only a great defender, he has offensive game too. His midrange game is solid, and he can actually faceup and drive as well. This series can be a coming out party for him offensively if he can show that. Chris Bosh in the meantime can finally prove he is indeed not soft if he can score against the robbed Defensive Player of the Year.

Dwyane Wade's offense vs Thabo Sefolosha's Defence

Thabo Sefolosha's defence against Kobe Bryant proved to be key in the series against the Lakers. Kobe was very inefficient when Sefolosha was guarding him. The only reason Kobe was able to go +40 in that series was because James Harden was guarding him a lot. On the other side, Dwyane wade is much quicker and faster than Kobe Bryant. This will be a lot tougher for the thunder shooting guard because he may not be quick enough to defend Dwyane Wade unless he forces Wade to be a jump shooter(look at game 3 of Indiana/Miami series).

In the end, if the Thunder can win the championship, I will put my money on them winning 2 or 3 years in a row. They are so young that if they win a championship now, who will stop them in the next coming years, they're not getting old and they are certainly only getting better. It's not like the Mavericks who were extremely old coming to this season. The Thunder, if they win, will still be young and will be very experienced for the player's ages. You can almost say the same thing for Miami, but with too many teams getting better, they will probably at the most win 2 in a row. In the end, this matchup will show who the real MVP was, and might show the next dominant team in the NBA when it comes to championships

I'm just disapointed that there were no real upsets in the playoffs this year. The two teams that nearly everyone has been predicting to reach the NBA finals, made it. I would have much rather had the Celtics make one last valiant run with their aging crew and same with the Spurs. Going into the playoffs, I was also hoping to see some of the mid seeds like the Grizzlies or Pacers figure out how to successfully utilize all the talent they have on their rosters and make possible finals runs. Thunder v Heat is just too predicable...

yes it's true it was predictable and so would be the spurs in the finals, but the last few finals haven't been predictable, so it's nice to see the two most dominant teams go to the finals for a change. It's really a showdown now between the two best teams in people's minds. I see what you mean though. I always wish teams like the Grizzlies and Pacers to make it far because they have the most pieces but are just missing that one incredible player. If Rudy Gay can become a I can score anytime I want player, the Grizzlies will win a championship. On the Pacers, it could practically be anyone who can become that guy
