Orioles Make Run Stand up Stop Slide 1-0
Brett Anderson was the hard luck loser allowing only 1 run
Oakland. CA At least the Orioles got off the losing streak. Despite a sluggish offense the Orioles did get the one hit that mattered, and RBI single by Luke Scott (who was starting in RF for the slumping Nick Markakis). It would be all the run support starter Jeremy Gutherie would need. Gutherie would pick up his second win of the season behind 6 innings of 4 hit ball.
The O's are still looking for an offensive spark and despite getting the win, the continue to struggle with the twigs. Right Fielder Nick Markakis who is hitting .186 was unceremoniously benched for Saturdays game. Manager Dave Trembley "He isn't performing right now and we needed a change. Nick is a pro and he will bounce back." In his place strangely enough was Luke Scott who entering the game was hitting .179 put had been hitting the ball hard. Scott rewarded his managers trust with the game winning RBI in the 2nd inning going 1 for 3 in the game, raising his average to .190.
On the mound it was an all hands scramble to preserve the win. Sensing that his team needed a win, Trembley would use 5 pitchers to get his win. Following the Quality Start by Gutherie who did a really good job of keeping the ball down and avoiding the long ball that has plagued him the last few years in Baltimore, he handed the ball to Cla Meridith in the 7th, and the combination of Jim Johnson and Will Ohmen in the 8th. Closer Mike Gonzalez shut the door in the 9th for his second save. "It a one run game you can't be afraid to make a move and you have to play match-ups. We needed that and it was good that everyone can feel like they contributed to a win we really needed." Trembley would say after the game.
The four game series will conclude Sunday with Brian Matusz and Dallas Braden go heads up.
