O's Slug Their Way to 2-0 Series Lead 7-3.
Jones' hit a controversial HR to give Baltimore the lead
Tampa, Fl It's like Miguel Tejada never missed a beat. The "new" Orioles third baseman hit his 2nd home run in as many games to help the Orioles defeat Matt Garza and the Tampa Bay Rays for the second time in as many days. The will also gave Baltimore it's first series win of the new season. Much maligned pitcher Jeremy Gutherie was strong in his season debut as well.
Guthrie went 7 strong innings allowing 8 hits, but only 1 earned run and striking out 6. It was the second quality start for Oriole pitchers this season. Gutherie the American League leader in HR allowed in 2009 did get touched up by Ray first baseman Carlos Pena in the second. "After last season, I really tried to work on keeping the ball down. The one to Pena I got it up and he got it out." He would say after the game. The Oriole bull pen would perserve the lead for Gutherie, Will Ohman and Clay Merideth went the final two innings allowing only a 2-run B.J. Upton homerun to come across.
Gutherie like Millwood was staked to an early lead in the game, when Adam Jones (The Orioles only 2009 All-Star) turned on a Garza fastball for a 2 run home run in the first. There was some controversy though and it appeared to all watching that the ball was foul, but there was no review and Joe Madden the Tampa skipper didn't argue. Joining Jones were Tejada and Luke Scott who each hit their 2nd homeruns of the campaing. Catcher Matt Wieters had a nice day at the plate going 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI's. Brian Roberts was busy on the base paths stealing 2 bases.
The Orioles will look for the sweep tomorrow, when lefties Brian Matusz and David Price tangle.
