Despite Bullpen Collapse O's Manage to get the Win
Tejada was the player of the game
Tampa, Fl. Some new faces played a pretty big role in the Baltimore Oriole's first victory of the season. Kevin Millwood pitched beautifully the first 5 innings going through the Tampa Bay Rays order without giving up a hit. Although he would finish giving up 6 hints in 6 and two thirds innings of work. Millwood wouldn't factor in the decision. Another new face, but one that is more familier to Oriole fans Miguel Tejada also made an impact on this game. Belting a 3-run home run that would get Baltimore off to a fast start and a 3-0 first inning lead.
It was a lead the Orioles would increase and hold onto much of the game. Behind Millwood's impressive pitching, he would strike out six and only allow two earned runs before being lifted in the 7th with two outs. Will Ohman would come in and close the door stiking out the lone batter he would face to close out the 7th inning. It was in the 8th that the Oriole pitching train would derail. Setup man Jim Johnson came into the game in the 8th inning with a 5-2 lead needing only three outs. While Johnson managed to get those outs he would surrender 3 runs and the lead blowing the save and surrendering 2 runs on a Ben Zobrist single before finally getting the last out.
In the 9th Luke Scott would bail not only the Orioles but Johnson out as well. Scott would hit a solo home run off Dan Wheeler to give the O's a 1 run lead heading into the bottom of the 9th. Mike Gonzalez the new Oriole closer would have all the runs he needed and he struck out 2 in the inning on his way to his first save of the inning. Afterwards it was all smiles for the victors although they would've preferred it without all the dramatics.
Tomorrow the Orioles will run out Jeremey Guthrie against Matt Garza.
