The J-E-T-S Jets are A-W-F-U-L awful.
After the performance the entire team put up on Monday Night, the Jets are a train wreck. Mark Sanchez threw four costly interceptions and Nick Mangold’s failure of a snap led the Jets to an embarrassing 14-10 loss to the Titans. With it, the Jets’ playoff chances were officially kaput.
It would be easy to blame the season all on Sanchez, who had led the league the last two years with 50 turnovers. It would be just as easy to blame it on the offensive line, which has let up 33 sacks this season and partly responsible for a 3.9 rushing yards per attempt.
However, the ultimate blame lays on the mismanagement of head coach Rex Ryan. Now with four seasons under his belt, it is time for Ryan to finally pack his bags and go at the end of the season.
His latest move of starting 7th round pick Greg McElroy over Tim Tebow is just another blunder on a long list of mistakes this season.
“It’s my decision and I based it on a gut feeling or whatever,” Ryan said on a conference call Tuesday. “Everything it comes down to is, I believe it’s the best decision for our team. That’s the only factor that goes into these decisions.”
Ryan’s decision is based on starting a quarterback that has only thrown for a total of 29 yards in his career. 29. Two. Nine.
This isn’t an article clamoring for Tebow to start, but Ryan’s stubbornness to stick with his intuition is a clear illustration on how much of a dysfunction the Jets are under his leadership. Even their new starting quarterback, Greg McElroy noticed how much of a mess the Jets are in the offseason.
“It’s the first time I’ve ever been around extremely selfish individuals,” McElroy said in an interview with 97.3 The Zone. “There were people within our locker room that didn’t care whether we won or lost as long as they got theirs, they had a good game individually."
That dysfunction, which Ryan vowed to fix, hasn’t changed this season. While it’s unclear how the attitudes of the players are during the season, the Jets are still very much a circus. What exactly has Ryan done to band the Jets together and patch their offensive problems?
Hiring Tony Sparano was not the answer. The Jets are actually ranked 30th in total offensive yards compared to 24th the year before. Of course injuries to their best receiver Santonio Holmes and their lack of depth at the receiver position might be a reason, but Soprano was brought in to fix the offense.
Instead, Sparano installed a wildcat offense that was utterly predictable. Plugging Tebow in on short yardage downs at 3 and 1 to dive up the middle will not get the team a first down. What made Tebow successful with last year, and what RG3 and Newton have also gotten away with, was a threat to run a zone option read to any direction. The wildcat and the misusage of Tebow also disrupted the Jets’ normal offense.
The decision to hire Sparano was on Ryan, which sources told ESPN’s Rich Cimini in January that Sparano was Ryan’s number one choice after Bill Callahan.
"When we sat down with Tony, I knew that he was the right person at the right time for our offense," Ryan said in a statement. "I've admired his work as a competitor in the division for the past three seasons. His teams were always physical, tough and hard-nosed."
The Jets, this season, are not a physical, tough and hard-nosed team.
Of the Jets’ six wins this season, only one has come against a team above .500 in the Indianapolis Colts. Even with the Colts win, the argument could have been made that the Jets should have pulled the plug on Sanchez after his game clinching interception to the Houston Texans on Monday Night Football.
This season, Sanchez has committed a turnover on the final drive of the game three times to give his team a defeat. Besides the game losing interception at Houston, Sanchez was sacked and fumbled in New England and lost control of a botched snap against the Titans.
The third time was the charm for Ryan to finally pull the plug, despite inconsistent play from Sanchez all season. Now Greg McElroy gives the Jets “the best chance to win.”
Although what happens if McElroy ends up being successful in the final two games of the season?
The Jets still need to fire Ryan. If McElroy looks impressive against a mediocre Chargers team and just as bad Bills team, what guarantee is there that Ryan and GM Mike Tannenbaum, who also needs to go, won’t stunt his growth just like he did Sanchez?
In Sanchez’s first two seasons, Sanchez showed a lot of poise in two crucial AFC playoff games on the road. Sanchez had a tough rookie year throwing 20 interceptions, but helped his team to the AFC Championship. He did the same thing the following year as well.
Where Sanchez failed to develop was in his third year and continued to regress in his fourth. Maybe Sanchez was garbage all along, but it’s up to Ryan and his coaching staff to help those developments. At the end of the day, Sanchez and those on the coaching staff who supported him failed to become significantly better in the year that he needed to make the jump.
There’s also the issue of what happens to Sanchez after this season. Sanchez is guaranteed to make $8.9 million next year, according to ESPN. If the Jets bring in someone new to compete with Sanchez and McElroy, will Jets fans be contempt in seeing another quarterback circus?
Ryan demonstrated an attitude that was refreshing to see among coaches when he was hired in 2009. His first two years were a success, but his guarantees to make the Superbowl ran short. As his team is treated as a laughing stock, one thing has become clear: the Rex Ryan that was a great leader is now a broken and diminished act.
Rex Ryan for once in your life, please exit quietly.
Should the Jets fire Rex Ryan? Let us know in the replies.

The Jets attempted to build a team through free agency and failed, and they have a lot of dead money to show for it. That's on Tannebaum. The Jets have traded away many of their draft picks over the years, and the guys they have drafted have rarely hit. That's on Tannebaum. The Jets gave Mark Sanchez a ridiculous vote-of-confidence contract and now it has backfired big-time to the point where the Jets cannot reasonably cut their losses next year and move on without serious salary cap implications. That's on Tannebaum.
Credit is deserved to Rex Ryan for doing his best to put Mark Sanchez in a situation to succeed; he's been steadfast in his support of Sanchez up until the bitter end. Ryan is also a perfect fit managing the New York media. He's not blameless, but Ryan has done more for his part than Tannebaum has for his, IMO.
In this particular situation, the GM should be the first to get the axe, not the coach, IMO.

I don't know if he completely deserves to be fired, but it's probably best for all involved. I can see his next stop as a head coach, (he'll most definitely get another shot), being more successful. Getting away from the New York media and learning to be a little less flamboyant would be good for him. He should also be paired with a more competent GM, and completely give the offensive reins to a good coordinator.
There is no doubting his ability to coach a defense. But, I feel the Jets are too big of a mess right now. Both sides need a fresh start.

No. I love reading the papers and seeing the Model Airplanes coach is in a foot fetish video, or that their franchise QB had a 17 year old girl in his apartment. I cannot stand the team due to their fans. I am a GIANTS fan, and I'm no saint, but the Model Airplanes fans have no respect. They're also the reason you can't drink late in the game due to a bonfire in the 80s...KEEP REX!!!

LOL at the guy who said tebow played in the AFC championship game last yaer, i could of swore the pats beat the ravens, but you know tebow fans love to rewrite history.
No coach in the NFL could win the talent Tanny gave Rex to work with this year, people just let espn form their opinion of a coach. Rex actually hasnt said anything this year, and to the Giants fan, you should love rex, he got your team fired up last december.
I do enjoy reading nonjets fan repeat everything they hear on ESPN...

The jets are terrible, the team is selfish and that's what they originally wanted. They wanted personalities with abilities. Put them all together and it is a scrambled mess.

Honestly, I think Ryan deserves one more year, but I don't think a new GM can fix all the problems in one off season. So, if Ryan stays, he will probably be fired after next year so the new GM can bring in his own coach.
