Tonight, the 3-7 Eagles will be playing the 2-8 Carolina Panthers at home on ESPN’s Monday Night Football.
How exciting.
Inept coaching and underperforming squads kept this game from being the ratings hit ESPN executives imagined when deciding what games to air in the offseason. Who could blame them either?
At the beginning of the season, the Eagles were seen as potential Superbowl contenders with an all-star team that would jell in its second year together. For the Panthers, they were seen as a potential dark horse with a chance to win the NFC South.
There was also the Michael Vick vs. Cam Newton element as well. Both quarterbacks who are known for their legs, would be facing off against each other in primetime.
Four months later, Vick is hurt and Newton is in a sophomore slump.
There are only two intriguing aspects from tonight’s game besides fantasy implications. Which Coach will make more bone headed decisions and how will Nick Foles do?
Will Ron Rivera go for it on fourth down when the odds are against him? Will Andy Reid run it with under two minutes to go and down by multiple scores? Will both mess up so bad they are fired by halftime?
Okay so they won’t be fired at half time, but by all accounts Andy Reid and Ron Rivera are dead men walking. However, Nick Foles’ future is very much up in the air.
In his first two games replacing Vick, Foles has thrown for 423 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. He’s also fumbled four times and has been sacked six.
By all accounts and purposes, Foles has had the same trouble Vick has had with an offensive line that is truly offensive.
Still, Foles is playing for his future. With Vick most likely to go along with Reid, it’s unclear if a new management and staff will see Foles as “the guy.”
As for this game, only fans and management connected to either team will be the only ones watching.
