Is it time to replace Michael Vick? Stuck

After a loss to the New Orleans Saints on Monday, Andy Reid said that Michael Vick will continue to be the Eagles’ starting quarterback going forward.

Reports during the week said that Reid, who had denied those reports, had been considering benching Vick for rookie Nick Foles. Speculation for benching Vick started the week before after a loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

"Obviously, he's thinking about making a change at the quarterback position," Vick said at a postgame press conference following the Falcons defeat. "I'm trying my hardest. Some things don't go right when I want them to, and some things do. So if that's the decision that coach wants to make, then I support it."

Following Monday’s game and Vick’s poor performance, the question continued to grow. Is it time to replace Vick for Foles?

Against the Saints, Vick struggled again in the area that’s been haunting him all season long –turnovers. In the redzone, Vick threw an interception to cornerback Patrick Robinson that was returned 99 yards for a touchdown.

While it was tipped off Brent Celek’s hands, it was Vick’s 15th turnover this year. The 32-year-old quarterback has had nine interceptions and six fumbles.

It doesn’t help that Vick has been sacked 27 times this season, including seven last game. According to ESPN Stats and Information, Vick has been under pressure on 32.5 percent of his drop backs this year. He was under duress 18 of 53 of his throws against the Saints.

Every game Vick continues to struggle, the demand for Reid to put Foles as the starter will grow. However with so many problems that the Eagles have such as the offensive line and lack of a pass rush, one could argue that Foles would be rushed into a situation where he would fail.

Still, perhaps Bill Simmons put it best when he pointed out the similarities in stats between Vick and Jake Delhomme. The following stats are:

Delhomme: 96 career starts, 56-40 record, 81.3 QB rating, 20,975 passing yards, 126 TDs, 101 INTs, 5-3 playoff record, 1 Super
Bowl appearance.

Vick: 99 starts, 56-41-1 record, 80.7 QB rating, 19,375 passing yards, 120 passing TDs, 80 INTs, 2-3 playoff record, 0 Super Bowl appearances.

If Delhomme was the quarterback in Philadelphia, would we even be having this conversation on when to replace him?

In fact the similarities between Vick and Delhomme could go beyond stats.

In 2009, Delhomme signed a 5-year extension worth $42.5 million after coming back from tommy john’s surgery and leading his team to a 12-4 record the previous season.

Vick’s 2011 season struck similar. He signed a six-year, $100 million contract after an impressive return to the NFL in 2010.

2009 was also Delhomme’s last year as a starter in Carolina.

Through 11 games, he led the Panthers to a 4-7 record with a 59.4 QB rating (8 TDs, 18 INTs). He was replaced by 25 year old Matt Moore in the last five games of the season. Also at the time of his replacement, Delhomme had 24 turnovers.

Right now, Vick sits at 3-5 as a starter in what could be his final year as an Eagle. He has currently turned the ball over 15 times this season, and could very well reach a number close to the amount of turnovers Delhomme has.

It’s hard to imagine Andy Reid not losing his job after this season, but is Michael Vick a formality as well?

What do you think? Will Michael Vick lose his job this season? Let us know in the replies.

I really believe no purpose would be served by rushing Foles into action behind that line, with the offensive play calling the current staff insists on using. Finish the season, clean house in the front office, then start next year with Foles having the job to lose.

I believe he should have been benched long ago. For as many big time mistakes Vick makes he seems to always get a pass from the media and fans mainly for his video-game like intangibles. At the end of the day, if your starting QB is costing you games there has to be a point where you re-evaluate the personnel. Vick is a coach killer: he did it for Dan Reeves, Bobby Patrino, and now Andy Reid. He's simply too sloppy with his mechanics and decision making; always has been and always will be.

If Vick had at least a half of a reliable line to block for him this conversation would not be taking place . The line Vick had in 2010 put Vick back on the map. How many other Qbs in the league right now can get behind Vick's Swiss cheese line and be more productive then him ?

Good luck trying any QB behind that o-line...Vick at least still has the ability to break the play and scramble. People say his INTs can't be attributed to the o-line though, well...of course it can. He's making rushed decisions/passes because he's always under duress. He's not the biggest reason this team has been underachieving...that o-line and the secondary are. People should point their fingers at NnamdiAsomugha who's being abused by every receiver in the league nowadays...

It's not Vicks fault. The offensive line needs to do a better job protecting him. How can any quarterback produce when they're being rushed the second the ball snaps?

@elgreazy Vick is not a coach killer by any stretch of the imagination. Dan lost his kids for the perforce the falcons put on without Vick while he was injured. Bobby skipped town in the middle of the season because he didnt have Vick. So the yo both ended up gone because **** wasnt playing. Not because of how.

All I gotta say is they showed 1 play before the game where Mike Vick had 1.8 seconds to throw the ball out of the Shotgun formation. O line is terrible , and we just lost our 3rd starting Offensive Lineman for the year in Herrimans. Going to be a rough end of the season.

@balcbomber

Why attack someone's English, just shows your character and its obvious you don't like Vick, Skip Bayless..

Anyways, its refreshing to see there are great football minds be wise it is the offensive line point blank.

To the OP, you said: " However with so many problems that the Eagles have such as the offensive line and lack of a pass rush, one could argue that Foles would be rushed into a situation where he would fail.

Oops,

But saying the above quote, you contridicting yourself. The same reasons your giving for Foles is why Vick is failing now. Morningwig or however you spell his name is the one that has to go.

Putting a guy with potential like Foles in there with that O-line would be like David Carr all over again except for not with the crazy high expectations. Expect sack after sack.

Vick is done. He looks like punch drunk boxer. I thought he had a concussion symptoms since last year. He would grab at his helmet at least once a game like his bell got rang.

He seems two steps slow out there and is thinking even slower.
