The Four Worst Calls thus far by Replacement Officials Stuck
Posted on September 26, 2012 at 10:06 AM.

By now, the fiasco that was Monday Night Football has been rightfully beaten to death. This was a single moment that initiated the NFL to spring into ten hours’ worth of talks with the official’s union.

However, that wasn’t the only call that demonstrated the incompetence of the replacement officials. Throughout the first three weeks of the NFL, NFL fans have found out what it’s like to be an NBA or a Boxing fan in terms of officiating.

Here are four of the worst calls this year:

1. Packers-Seahawks interception

The NFL finally had a game where the replacement officials cost a team a game.

While there has been instances of this happening before like Hochuli’s blown San Diego-Denver call, but at least that play wasn’t reviewable at the time. In the case of Jennings’ interception, the referee’s had the technology to see that Tate didn’t have dual possession on the instance of the catch. Even as they hit the ground, Jennings has the ball fully in control for a moment before Tate rips it from him.

The fact that the NFL stood by the call in a press release a day later makes it even worse.

2. Seattle’s Extra Timeout

Although it didn’t give Seattle the game, the Seahawks were awarded an extra timeout on the final drive against the Arizona Cardinals. Referee Bruce Hermansen forgot to account for an injury that should have stripped Seattle of its final time out because the injury happened within the final two minutes.

After five minutes of deliberation, the crew failed to admit their mistake and Seattle again got away with another play.

Imagine if Seattle had gotten that win because of that timeout. They would be 3-0 with two fluke wins.

3. Phantom Pass Interference

During the Jets-Steelers in Week 2, Ike Taylor was mysteriously called for pass interference when running with Santonio Holmes.

The play resulted in a 19 yard gain. It was the biggest gain of that drive for the Jets, who were forced to punt after.
The worst part about that play is Taylor ran stride for stide with Holmes. There’s not even a case for Illegal Contact or Defensive Holding. Taylor only extends his arms within the first two yards of scrimmage, a perfectly legal move.

4. Not spotting the ball correctly

Monday Night Football’s been an embarrassment for the replacement officials. Late in the second quarter of the Broncos-Falcons’ game, replacement refs spotted the ball six more yards that eventually led to a Denver touchdown.

On 4th and 1 at the 43 yard line, cornerback Dominque Franks was called for defensive holding on Brandon Stokley to give Denver a first down. Instead of placing the ball at the 38, officials placed the ball at the 32 yard line.

What’s absolutely terrifying about this play is that it’s basic counting. Are these referees so unqualified that they can’t even spot the ball correctly after calling a penalty?

Sound Off: What other terrible calls should the referees not have made? What calls did they miss? Let us know in the replies.

Roughing the passer call on Walden and Pass interference on Sam Shields, all in the last drive that led to the hail mary touchdown were horrendous calls. If it were real referees, we wouldn't even be talking about this last play, because simply it wouldn't probably have happen had these calls be made correctly!

49ers calling their final timeout to stop the clock then realising the runner fumbled so convinced the ref that they actually wanted to challange the play. Thats pretty basic stuff. Being a niners fan I was actually, happy with that, even though it didnt do them any good.

^^^ This was pretty egregious. Plus, he fumbled it AFTER the whistle had blown on the first one.
