Tonight, Thursday Night Football gets one of the best rivalry in sports when the Chicago Bears face off against the Green Bay Packers.
How times have changed.
The Bears-Packers marks the first game this year where the league has expanded Thursday Night Football. Gone are the days of complaining that there aren’t exciting match ups on TNF. The Bears-Packers is an exciting match up that could potentially reveal a lot about the teams.
While the teams are on a short week, mostly every team this year will have to face a short week once. The NFL expanded its Thursday night coverage this year from weeks 2 through 15. This evens out the potential unfairness that some teams would have to play on a short week.
Also, having NFL Network is a lot more common nowadays. In 2007, many people complained that the Giants-Patriots season finale was only going to be on the NFL network and eventually got the game to air on CBS. However, the complaint hadn’t stopped the NFL Network from growing. The NFL feels comfortable enough to put a 13 game line up on their channel compared to Comcast or TNT.
When Thursday Night Football was introduced, the general thought was that there wasn’t a “need” for games on Thursday. Now as the NFL continues to grow, the need will become the norm.
Thursday is here to stay.
