Could big time trades finally happen at the NFL trade deadline? Stuck
Posted on August 31, 2012 at 12:45 PM.

After months of contemplating it, the NFL and the NFLPA agreed to a deal that would extend the NFL trade deadline to week eight. By extending the deadline two weeks, teams now have the flexibility to make bigger moves to impact their squads at the half way mark.

Now, fans have to ask, is will they?

In the past, teams rarely made moves at the deadline. The only notable trade last season at the deadline was Brandon Lloyd being shipped off to St. Louis for a fifth round pick. The year before, Randy Moss was shipped, albeit before the deadline, to Minnesota for a third.

There are a couple of reasons that teams rarely pulled the trigger. Player for player trades aren’t as common as they are in other sports, so if a team needed to trade a player, they would just wait until the end of the season so they could get max value out of the player.

In addition, the NFL’s hard cap lets teams get rid of contracts a lot easier. We won’t see a fire-sell of bad contracts like the Dodgers took on because teams can waive players and not pay the full salary. Of course there is the signing bonus to pay, but teams are more likely willing to absorb that then trading the player in the middle of the season.

However, this was before the league pushed the deadline two weeks back. Now teams will be able to make trades at the half way mark instead of the first quarter being done.
It’s gives teams more leeway to make a trade to try and change their season.

Imagine if Indianapolis Colts had made a trade during week 8 last year. When this issue was being originally discussed on NFL Live the one afternoon, Bill Pollian had said that if the deadline was two weeks later, they most likely would have dealt for Kyle Orton to try and fill the void at quarterback.

If they had, there’s no guarantee that the Colts would have gotten Andrew Luck. Instead, Pollian most likely wouldn’t be an analyst for ESPN and Peyton Manning would still be in Indianapolis.

With the deadline being pushed back, it’ll be interesting to see which management makes moves to try and save their jobs.

We might never get big blockbuster deals, but the NFL could have more movement with the rule change. All we have to do is wait and see.

Do you think there will be more movement at the trade deadline now that it has been pushed back two weeks? Let us know in the comments.

I don't think this is going to make as much a difference as people may think. If a team is contending for the division you may see some draft picks traded to sure up a spot with an injured player maybe. No major block buster deals will go down though.
