Looking at some notable cuts as teams cut down to 75 Stuck
Posted on August 29, 2012 at 09:20 AM.

This week, teams were forced to cut down to 75 players. Among the cut were notable veterans such as Terrell Owens and Chris Cooley.

For the players cut, finding a new job isn’t easy. It's difficult to get a second chance in the NFL, let alone a fourth like Owens.

Let’s take a look at some notable players who were cut and discuss if they’ll find work again

Vince Young

Team who cut him: Buffalo Bills

Why he was cut: At this point, no one seems to know. Young had mediocre preseason games with going 25-of-52 for 276 yards, along with 2 INTs. However, he was replaced with Seattle’s Tarvaris Jackson. Is Jackson honestly that much better than Young? Was it worth giving up a draft pick?

Will he find work again?
The former Rookie of the Year still has a 31-19 record as a starter. However, having thrown more interceptions than touchdowns and him being on his third team in six years as a pro makes him a risky gamble. Unless a team has a drastic quarterback emergency, Young most likely will have to sit out all of 2012.

Chris Cooley

Team who cut him: Washington Redskins

Why he was cut: The emergence of Fred Davis and Cooley’s injuries led Washington to feel that this was the right move. The eight year veteran was scheduled to make 3.8 million in salary this year and the Skins felt it was too much of a price to pay for a backup.

Will he find work again?
Cooley was reportedly healthy and I’m sure teams will be calling for his services to take a chance on him. Although after his near breakdown with the media after being cut, it wouldn’t surprise anyone if he retired. Cooley took great pride in being a Redskin and admitted that it would be tough to put on another team’s jersey.

Terrell Owens

Team who cut him: Seattle Seahawks
Why he was cut: Drops. Drops, drops, and more drops. Carroll was in love with Owens, but the 39 year old wideout failed to look more impressive than Braylon Edwards. With only having room for one veteran receiver, the Seahawks had no choice but to cut TO.

Will he find work again?
This is the end of the line for TO. Coaches like Pete Carroll and Jim Harbaugh go against the grain and take chances to sign risky players. For every other NFL team, they’re likely to play it safe. I’d be very surprised if a team took another chance on TO as much as it would be nice to see it.

Graham Gano

Team who cut him: Washington Redskins

Why he was cut: Gano had a shaky 2011 where he made 31-of-41 field goals. This wasn’t good enough for Mike Shannahan apparently and Gano was let go. Ironically, he was replaced by equally as shaky Billy Cundiff. The change in kickers brings the Redskins to have 18 kickers in the last 17 years.

Will he find work again?
Yes. Kickers always seem to get a second opportunity. Gano’s strong leg will get another team calling him eventually.

Do you think any of these NFL players will find work again? Let us know in the comments.

What kills me is the amount of people that actually think ratings in Madden and 2k are how guys really are. If you watch games you would realize VY has not progressed at all since his rookie season. In fact he probably has regressed. These coaches who cut players watch them every day in practice along with the games, so who am I to question that? VY, TO, Ocho all has beens and its time for younger guys to come up and show what they have. This is a young man's league, yet people will always fall in love with the has beens.

It just makes me laugh how all the analysts predicted that Owens or Chad Johnson will be the WR's that will make a good comeback and not Moss...now Moss is the only one still on a roster, hahahahahaha

Weird to me tho that VY does have a 31-19 QB record...and can't hold on as a backup anywhere? I don't even like him but wouldn't mind seein him back up Josh Freeman.
