What we learned on the Dolphins’ Hard Knocks episode 4 Stuck
Posted on August 29, 2012 at 09:38 AM.

It was a busy week for the Miami Dolphins. The team continued evaluating their roster and eventually made cuts to make the 75 deadline, all while managing trade talks with the Indianapolis Colts.

As always, HBO was there to capture it all. Here’s what we learned on this week’s Hard Knocks:

Jeff Ireland’s thought process on trading Vontae Davis
This was easily the best part of this week. Ireland, who many consider to be an awful GM, let the audience know exactly his thought process on the trade. To Ireland and the team, Davis was an inconsistent player who wasn’t in the team’s future. It was great seeing the deal go from a fifth and sixth, to a third, to a second, and then finally a second with a conditional sixth. Management was all on board, but it will be interesting to see how the players react next week.

HBO knows how to shoot a documentary series
This might not have exactly been “learned.” However, the amount of training footage that was shot up close was absolutely stellar this week. From Tannehill’s perfect spiral to the fitting use of the lyrics “and the cracks begin to show,” HBO nailed the montages this week.

The Les Brown show is finally, finally over
Never have I been happier to see to someone get cut than Les Brown. As much as HBO focused on him, Les Brown might as well have been an Al Haymon client.* Honestly, Les Brown should have never gotten that much coverage for a tight end who can’t block. He didn’t even come off as that likable. Chris Hogan is a much more interesting “long shot” to make the team.

Good riddance.

Other Observations
- It’s getting a bit tiresome of Joe Philbin’s dad like approach to his players. Not sure how well it resonates with the players either.

- How did Ryan Tannehill not know the divisions?

- The way Dan Campbell relates to his players shows flashes that he could be a head coach someday.

- Even if David Garrard’s appearance was brief, it’s hard not to feel for him after his injury. I wonder who’d be starting right now if he was healthy.

- Seriously, how did Tannehill not know the divisions?

*If you got the Haymon reference, kudos.

I am going to call my grandma. Seriously? In the middle of the conversation about you being traded? I can see why they think he is not up to speed on his reads.

The Les Brown deal - seems like an ok guy I guess, but dudes get cut all the time and land somewhere else. He needs to gain another 20 pounds and keep working. Philbin will not be a coach in this league long.... I am not hatin' on the guy - but he just does not seem like he is all there in terms of what is going on. His demeanor seems so off. Maybe it will work, but seems he has no fire or urgency in his words to his guys. You dont have to cuss every other word or at all for my taste - but seems he could be a bit more like Sherm and get under his guys a bit so they know where they stand a bit. Just IMO.

You know this season of Hard Knocks is about a crappy team when half of the time they're following offensive linemen...what a snooze.

First off I think Philbin is a jackass. his approach sucks IMO. Ireland another jackass who should have been fired a looooong time ago . ...I like Tannehill but how do you not know the divisions LOL? IMO ...and i have been saying this for a while now, until Ireland is gone I dont see this team doing much above .500 ball. his talent evaluation is poor at best IMO
