Randy Moss and Terrell Owens look for a shot at redemption
Posted on August 17, 2012 at 01:21 AM.
Make no mistake, the Niners and Seahawks are taking risks.
The wrap up on Owens and Moss has been well documented throughout the years. Both players have the reputation of being selfish that can affect the locker room and even their own performances. Many teams have passed on the opportunities to sign either of them.
There are also concerns over their ages. Owens, 38, hasn’t played in the NFL since 2010, even if he had a good statistical year with the Bengals. Moss, 35, also took last year off when he couldn’t find a suitor for his talents.
Even with the risks, San Francisco and Seattle were in the market for wide receivers. They were willing to roll the dice. So far, it appears that Moss and Owens have been standouts in camp.
“Just the way he competes, and he’s always talking about football,” 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh told the San Jose Mercury News. “I’ve never come up on him in one of those loud, gregarious moods where he’s not talking about football.”
Likewise, Pete Carroll had high remarks for his team’s new receiver.
“I like the look in his eye. He’s dead serious about proving himself and doing something. So I’m just going to give him a chance to do it. We’re thrilled to get him out here and have him battle,” Carroll told the Seattle Times.
Still, both receivers will need to hit the actual field to truly impress. Moss played in four plays in their first preseason game and Terrell Owens is scheduled to play this Saturday in Denver. If successful, both receivers have the chance to be key additions to their team’s offense.
In San Francisco, a redzone threat besides Vernon Davis was needed. Moss’ 6’5 frame gives Alex Smith an option he didn’t have a year ago. For Seattle, Owens was brought in to be a veteran presence and give his team a little more depth for newly acquired Matt Flynn.
Although, it’s been made clear by both teams that Moss and Owens will be rotational receivers. For the two best wideouts in the previous decade, will they be okay with occasional playing time?
That isn’t the only problem that could arise either. It’s not like Alex Smith and Matt Flynn are Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. While both have seemed to improve, both quarterbacks aren’t the most accurate passers around the league. Would Moss and Owens throw their QBs under the bus if they aren’t getting the ball?
If Moss and Owens want to redeem themselves, they’ll have to be like Chad Johnson on the Patriots. They’ll have to be quiet and buy into the system they are playing in.
Except this time, they’ll have to produce.
Do you think Moss and TO will have a productive season? Let us know in the comments below.
