Quarterback battles less than thrilling so far Stuck
Posted on August 13, 2012 at 01:20 AM.

What happened to the quarterback battles in the preseason?

Kevin Kolb throws an interception on his very first play. John Skelton proceeds to look mediocre in the second game. Hasselback throws two interceptions, including a pick six on his first throw. Jake Locker takes over for a less than 50% completion rate. David Garrard? He’s out for the preseason and Matt Moore didn’t exactly make the case on why he should be starting over Ryan Tannehill.

After one week of the NFL being back, some of the most hyped quarterback competitions have turned out to be duds. Yes it’s only been one game so far, but this was a time for each individual to shine. We’re supposed to have a better idea on who should start. Instead, we’ve gotten messy quarterback play that could end up being major problems for all teams involved.

The excuse of teams not having a full off-season to learn the playbook is dead this year. Many speculated that Kolb didn’t have a full grasp of the offense last season due to the shortened lockout.

Now with a full training camp and OTA workouts, Kolb should have a grasp of the offense. His stats through two games? 2-9 for 25 yards and 1 interception.

John Skelton has done marginally better with 7 of 12 for 67 yards, 1 INT. Still according to Ken Whisenhunt, Kolb will start the third game against the Oakland Raiders. Clearly, no man has stood out like the team was hoping for.

That’s been the case for the Titans too. Reports out of training camp had been positive with Locker and Hasselbeck both looking good. When it was game time, both failed to impress. Although, it is worth noting that the QB situation in Tennessee might not be as grim as it is in Arizona.

However if there are still interesting quarterback battles out there, it’s between the rookies trying to make a statement. Nobody seemed to believe Pete Carrol after he stated that a QB completion was going on since Matt Flynn signed a lucrative contract.

However after Russell Wilson’s impressive debut, you can at least see where Carrol was coming from. Wilson went 12-16 for 124 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. He also rushed for 59 yards off three attempts and scored on a 32 yard run.

In Miami, Ryan Tannehill also had a solid debut going 14-21 for 167 yards and a touchdown. While both Tannehill and Wilson’s performances were against the second units, they at least showed why their teams thought highly of them.

Still, after all the buzz and speculation about the quarterback battles in the sport, week 1 created more questions than answers.

What do you think of the quarterback competitions happening around the league? Are they overplayed? Did we learn anything from week 1? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
