I’ve been playing videogames for a while now, dating back to playing Contra in the laundromat, spilling away countless quarters. Throughout this time there’s been countless moments which stick out, that illustrate the beauty and yet agony of playing video games.
One of these such moments occurred roughly about eight years, the game was Sammy Sosa High Heat Baseball 2001(PC). I had been playing this game for a few months and done a decent job of keeping my rosters up to date, and then it happen.
The Scene: Minute Maid Park, The Teams: Cubs(Me), Astros(CPU).
It was just another game in August, I had been running away with the division, and a 5th starter going for in Julian Tavarez. For the first few innings everything seem normal, Tavarez seem to have his splitter going, getting the groundballs he needed. And then it happen I realized he had a perfect game going, which I had never accomplish in a videogame. For then new few innings I ratcheted up the concentration level, trying to make the perfect pitch selection, trying to be alert on the field, 5,6,7 innings of perfection complete.
The eight inning started, six outs to go, Tavarez was tiring, but his splitter was still nasty, the first guy goes done easy, and then Richard Hidalgo comes up to plate. First pitch a splitter inside, he swings, it cracks his bats, but it finds its way up the middle and into center-field. I’ve never been so devastated after Julian Tavarez pitched game. It was a game I didn’t expect much going into the game, but the nerves and the joy of what may be, were quickly replaced by the disappointment of being so close to perfection. It was just one of those moment that illustrated the beauty and yet agony of playing video games.
Has any one else experienced such a moment while playing video games?

On my favorite baseball game of all time Hardball 3 I pitched a perfect game with Orel Hershiser.
