I've always personally thought that Crosby was the all-around better hockey player, but up until this season, Ovechkin was a better goal scorer. Now I believe that Crosby is better than Ovechkin in pretty much every aspect of the game. Crosby is a better passer, better forechecker, better backchecker, and an overall better offensive threat. Ovechkin has been a great goal scorer ever since he stepped into the NHL, and he truly hasn't gotten any better at skills other than offense. He has been very similar year-to-year, which is still very solid, with his goal numbers being high. He is still not very good on defense and his passing ability is not top-notch. When Crosby came into the league, he was a small kid with a big stick. He was very mediocre/below average at faceoffs when he came into the league, and now he is one of the best, if not, the best, faceoff man in the NHL. Crosby was a very risky and aggressive passer when he was young, and as the years go on, he gets better and better at passing and the sky is the limit on how good he can be at passing the puck. Last but not least, Crosby was not known for his goal scoring, and he did not put many pucks onto the netminder when he played. Before the 2009-2010 season, Crosby decided that he was not scoring enough goals and taking enough shots, so he worked all offseason on his offensive skills, changing the curve on his stick, and getting a better feel for the scoring lanes on the ice, and guess what happens? Crosby wins the "Rocket" Richard trophy. So my point is that Ovechkin entered the league as a great goal scorer and he is not going to get much better than he already is. On the other hand, Crosby has gotten better and better every year and his ceiling is very high up there. Sid and Ovechkin will continue to excite and entertain the league year after year, and this will most likely be a debate until the sun doesn't shine anymore. I just feel that Crosby brings more to the table, is a better leader, and a winner that doesn't quit or break down during the pressure.
Final Word: Crosby > Ovechkin

Yeah, this one is easy. Crosby is by far the better player. His determination and desire to become a better more complete player are off the charts. Ovie can score and deliver some big hits, everything else he does is pretty mediocre.

While much of this is true. Ovi has become a better passer. His assist numbers are up this year, while his goals are down, he has improved his passing. There are a lot of things that Crosby does better than Ovi and passing may be one, but to say that Ovi's passing hasn't improved especially this season, shows that you aren't watching a lot of capital games.

I'm willing to bet Ovie's assists have more to do with the fact he's not scoring as much as he's getting the assists on rebounds..not actual passing. But admitedly I don't watch the Caps because I'm Canadian and they (the capitals)don't exist according to national broadcasters. But heyyyy we get to watch the leafs and sens every weekend, wooo!

It's always fun to answer questions of a young hockey fan.
Me personally, I like Sidney Crosby over Ovechkin, mostly because I am from Pittsburgh and a huge Pens fan. Crosby is a natural-born leader and a very gifted athlete who seems to just keep getting better and better as time goes by. He seems to make goals for himself every summer and he works on those parts of his game very hard, and the results clearly show how great he truly is.
Over time, I believe that both will get better as the seasons roll on, but it seems to me that Crosby's ceiling is much higher than Ovechkin's for reasons being that Crosby is a center, so he is very versatile, his hard work on his defensive game to become more of a two-way forward, meaning he is both offensively and defensively minded, and every year, Crosby picks something in his arsenal that he feels is lacking, and improves on that aspect of his game. Two easy examples of this are his face-off skill and goal-scoring ability. In Sid's early years of his career, he was known as a rather unreliable face-off man with his low numbers and poor ability to get down quick on the puck. He worked hard one summer on his face-offs, and the very next season, he was up on top of the face-off stat sheets, and this season, he was leading the NHL before his concussion. Last season, Crosby won the "Rocket" Richard trophy, thanks to his persistence in wanting to score and shoot more often. Before the last season, Crosby made a few changes to his offensive game, like getting more of a curve on his stick and wanting to take more shots instead of being a more pass first, shoot second type player, and those results turned into the most goals that year, so that just shows how quick and good Crosby truly is.
Do I believe Ovechkin will win a Stanley Cup? Well honestly, I do. The man is too talented to constantly keep losing in the playoffs and not being able to jump the hump into the finals. As he matures more, I believe he will become a more solid leader for the Capitals and he will tune up his game a bit and score 50+ goals every year. There's no denying the man's talent or game, but he has become more known as a loser and a guy that can't take that pressure in the playoffs, but i'm sure he will shake those critics off eventually. He also needs a good goaltender to come play with him because he truly hasn't had a great goaltender to lead the team through a playoff run.
Some differences between them is Ovechkin is more of a sniper and will take his shots, but Crosby is more of a passer and shot second type guy. Crosby still takes his fair shots in his games, but no where near how much Ovechkin looks at the net and shoots. Crosby's passing ability is a definite step-up from Ovie's. Crosby is also more athletic and has a better hockey mind. Ovechkin is very aggressive and a hitter that will get in your face, but Crosby is more of a guy that won't get up in your face unless you provoke him.
They for sure have some similarities too. They both are extremely talented and superstar players. In recent years, they both have become solid goal scorers that you can rely on for getting you those numbers. They both have a high desire to win, they both want to be the best players in the world, and they are pretty much the faces of their respective countries, especially for the sport of hockey.
I have no problems answering any more questions if you didn't understand anything or if you have anymore questions about them. All in all, I think Crosby is a better player and will be for years to come.
