Iron Maiden long ago attained legendary status in the hard rock/heavy metal community. Formed on Christmas Day 35 years ago, Iron Maiden has released 14 studio albums, 11 live albums, 4 EP's, 3 box sets, and a host of singles. The lineup has changed over the years but most would consider the core of Iron Maiden to be founder and principle song writer Steve Harris, vocalist Bruce Dickinson, guitarists Adrian Smith and Dave Murray, and drummer Nicko McBrain. The core, plus guitarist Janick Gers ... Read More

One of my favorite genres of video games is the RPG. I like all of the different sub-genres from the traditional turn-based "Japanese" style to the less restrictive, more action of the Americanized RPG's such as Neverwinter Nights and Elder Scrolls. For the more Japanese style, the Super Nintendo and Playstation were the best of times. I'm honestly torn on which era I enjoyed more. On one hand, the SNES had Final Fantasy VI and Secret of Mana, but the Playstation had Final Fantasy Tactics and ... Read More

Like many males my age (20's), I grew up with wrestling. And presumably like many others, my fandom was contained to two eras; the 80's kid friendly product and the "Attitude" era with a dead spell in between and after. And even though I've mostly outgrown my affection for the squared-circle, I still enjoy the games.

Why people love and fall out of love with wrestling is a separate entry all on its own. As for why the games still seem to hold universal appeal I'm not sure. Perhaps ... Read More

I've done one blog entry on Danzig in the past and it was an album review for the 1994 album Danzig 4p. That was the last time anyone could truly say Danzig put out a great album and have a leg to stand on. If you're not a Glenn Danzig fan, a brief history lesson. Danzig was formed in 1988 when Rick Rubin decided to get into the metal business. Glenn Danzig was already a legend of the underground via his work with The Misfits and Samhain so this seemed like a match made in Heaven (or Hell), ... Read More

I know we have some metal fans here at OS and I know more than one is a fan of Tobias Sammet's work under the Avantasia moniker.

A quick refresher for those uninformed and curious; Tobi Sammet and others formed Edguy in the early to mid 90's. Based in Germany, Edguy is best described as a European Power Metal band but in later years has embraced more of a hard rock sound. Around 2000, looking to fill-out their album obligation to Century Media before bolting for the much bigger ... Read More

Thanks to ESPN and their affection for all things Boston and NY I figured the general populace of OS would have little interest in a topic about the Red Sox so I've made this a blog post.

As most know, Boston's biggest acquisition this winter was starting pitcher John Lackey, a guy who when healthy gives a club a ton of innings above league average quality. While it is fair to quibble with the amount of money Boston gave him, few can argue the importance of adding a quality hurler ... Read More

Nintendo recently released remakes of its popular Pokemon Gold and Silver games on the DS. Some mini games were added, the visuals improved with the use of the Pokemon Diamond and Pearl engine, and a Tamagotchi-like device comes packaged with the games to differentiate them from the originals which came out over 10 years ago. If you were active in the Pokemon craze back then, you'd remember that Pokemon Gold and Silver were basically the same as Red and Blue which slightly updated visuals (to ... Read More

By now you've heard, Nomar Garciaparra has decided to hang-up the spikes. A player who at one point looked like a shoe-in for Cooperstown is done at age 36. He'll likely get a few votes five years from now when he becomes eligible for the Hall of Fame and will likely fare just as well as another big market star who faded too soon (Mattingly) and hang around for a few years but ultimately fall well short of enshrinement.

As a result, its easy to forget just how good Nomar was when ... Read More

The 90's were a turning point in music. Hip hop became fully accepted as part of the main stream, pop kind of died and then was revived, techno, electronica, dance whatever all increased in popularity and rock went through an "alternative" stage before, more or less, dying before the decade was over.

I was born in the 80's and grew up in the 90's. I listened to a lot of music in the 90's, some popular some not, and it really was the decade I formed most of my musical tastes. Therefore, ... Read More

I've spent countless hours with the MLB "The Show" franchise to the point that I would hate to see just how many hours of my life has been spent playing these games. Many, many posters have gushed over the more recent entries in the series so I feel no need to pile on. I will say there's no longer an argument for any game prior. Sure the last MVP game to feature the MLB license was an excellent game, but The Show surpassed it a couple of years ago and those refusing to admit so are just hung ... Read More

Boys fall into two categories as children, those that love trucks and those that love action figures. I personally was a matchbox kid until around the age of 5 when I presumably saw my first Ghostbusters cartoon. The Ghostbusters were an obsession until one day at the store I saw the first series of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures. I somehow got my mom to purchase three for me (Leonardo, Donatello, and Krang) with what I assume was likely birthday money or something. The TMNT obsession ... Read More

I must confess, there's few blog posts more pretentious than the one's about music. When one rips down a popular artist they come across as bitter or someone just trying to break away from the crowd. When someone touts an unknown band they come across as elitist and snotty, since its usually done at the expense of another genre/band/album/etc. If this comes across as anything like that, its not my intent but hey, it comes with the territory,

I love Danzig. It's no secret to anyone ... Read More

The cause of death for Michael Jackson has just been released: food poisoning. Apparently the coroners found 11 year old nuts in him
Farrah Fawcett made one last request before she died which was to protect the children. Shortly there after, Michael Jackson died.

Just a sampling of some of the jokes I've heard since news broke of Jackson's passing. This isn't a post about being upset about jokes being made at a celebrity's expense, it comes with the territory even ... Read More

Just another piece that is contributing to the dumbing down of the league. Do you think managers or front office people were complaining to the commissioner after Nolan Ryan beaned someone? No, they just retaliated in whatever fashion they deemed appropriate.

For those of you reading this unwilling to click on the link, the story is basically the Yankees are complaining to Major League Baseball and lobbying for a ... Read More
