Us Mariner fans were given something else to cheer about (the bats have started to heat up for the M's as well...) last night when Tom Wilhelmsen completed a no-hitter against the best team, and my second favorite baseball team, the Los Angeles Dodgers. First off, I'm going to list off some interesting facts of the game:
1. Six pitchers completed the no-hitter, the second time it has happened (the first being when the Houston Astros collectively held the New York Yankees hitless in 2003)
2. Stephen Pryor got the win, despite pitching 1/3 of an inning, giving up 2 walks and striking out one. It was his first career win.
3. Brendan Ryan came in as a defensive replacement to Munenori Kawasaki. Dee Gordon lead off the 9th with a slow roller to Ryan, who then proceeded to throw him out on a bang-bang play at first to preserve the no-hitter.
4. Kevin Millwood started the game, going 5 innings with one walk and six strikeouts. He left the game after throwing a warm-up pitch in the 6th with a mild groin strain.
5. Chone Figgins, who was benched earlier this season, entered as a defensive replacement in left who saved the no-hitter with a running catch to prevent AJ Ellis of an RBI.
6. Both Houston and Seattle's no-hitters were interleague match ups.
7. Houston's team no-hitter was on June 3, 2003. That was the second no-hitter of the season at the time, the first being Kevin Millwood's no-hitter with Philadelphia on April 27th.
Fun stuff, it was definitely the highlight of the season so far for the Mariners. The Dodgers' Nathan Eovaldi pitched a great game as well, the final score was 1-0. So, my question this time is...
How many no-hitters will be thrown this season (including perfect games)? There's 4 so far this season...
