5 games started, 0-1, 1.02 ERA, 35.1 IP, 20 hits, 4 earned runs (!), 36 strikeouts, 0.85 WHIP.
This is the story of Ryan Dempster, the go-to veteran pitcher of the Chicago Cubs.He is having a terrific comeback year after going 10-14 with a 4.8 ERA last season. He's averaged 7 innings per start, and averages a 1.02 ERA in each start. 1 run! That's an excellent way to start the season!
The problem is the lack of run support- as a Mariner fan I can relate with Felix Hernandez- but to the Cubs, it has to be frustrating. To see your guy on the mound blowing away hitters, not giving up hits, home runs, RUNS... and the offense not getting a few runs on the board, it hurts. It is hard to watch a game where your pitcher is throwing a gem and is getting nothing to show for it! I imagine Ryan Dempster is taking an extra half hour of BP before each game to see if he can help his own cause.
Normally I would give a solution, but there's nothing I could really give. The other starting pitchers are getting their servings of run support. Are the batters taking a step back when they know that their guy is on the mound? Or is it just that a new curse is a-rise in Chicago?
If you were Dave Sveum (the manager of the Cubs), what would you tell your hitters the next game Ryan Dempster pitches?

To answer my own question (as I feel I should do this more often): If I were Dave Sveum, I would tell my hitters that this man is working his tail off on the mound, so step in and bring that focus in.
