Atkinson ignites Irish again
Irish comeback from 24-0 deficit

ND 43 TERPS 31

George Atkinson sparked Notre Dame again with a 95 yard kick return touchdown.

The Fighting Irish got off to a sluggish start in Saturday night's clash with the Maryland Terapins. Right from the opening kickoff, Maryland was on a mission to upset the Irish. The Terps took the kickoff and scored on their opening drive. Minutes later after stopping the Irish offense, Maryland quarterback Danny O'Brien again carved up Notre Dame's defense. O'Brien again led the Terps to another score to go up 14-0.

The beginning of the second quarter didn't get any better for coach Brian Kelly and the Irish. O'Brien had the Terps offense flowing. With over five minutes to play in the second, O'Brien launched a 59 yard bomb down the sideline to senior wide receiver Ronnie Tyler. Irish were down 21-0. On top of that, Maryland again added a field goal right after to make it 24-0. With 3:45 left to play in the second, Notre Dame needed a spark.

That spark came from a familiar freshman named George Atkinson. This is becoming routine for Atkinson. Need a big play to spark the team? In steps the freshman. After going up 24-0, the Terps kicked off after the field goal to Atkinson. Big mistake. He returned it 95 yards for the score to make it 24-7. Now the comeback begins. The defense for the Irish then went and stopped the Terps. Quarterback Andrew Hendrix got the ball back with just over a minute remaining in the first half. Hendrix completed a 59 yard pass to receiver Robby Toma and got them to the 33 yard line. With :05 seconds remaining, Hendrix hit Michael Floyd in the back of the endzone for the touchdown making it 24-14 at the half. Irish were back in the game.

Michael Floyd hauls in one of his two touchdowns at the end of the second quarter.

Irish received the kick for the start of the second half. They continued the comeback on the back of halfback Jonas Gray. He scampered for a 47 yard touchdown and made it 24-21. The Irish inched even closer sacking Danny O'Brien on the following series to make it 24-23. After receiving the punt, Hendrix hooked up with Floyd again on a 34 yard touchdown to take the lead 29-24.

Andrew Hendrix operated a great comeback in the second half Saturday night against the Terps.

Jonas Gray opened the fourth quarter with another touchdown to jump up 36-24. Maryland made it interesting driving for one more touchdown making it 36-31 with 4:28 remaining in the game. Brian Kelly then called on the talented freshman Atkinson. "George doesn't have an elaborate package right now. We just have a few plays installed for him. They hadn't seen him yet at running back so I thought I'd throw him in unnoticed" said coach Kelly. Atkinson bolted for a 51 yard touchdown closing out the game 43-31. While it started off scary, Kelly and the staff were thrilled with their resilience. It was a big win on the road for the Irish.
