Andrew Hendrix leads Irish to victory in first career start
USC 15 ND 29

Sophomore quarterback Andrew Hendrix played well in his first career start.
The Fighting Irish had their biggest win of the year on a rainy, wet, and cold Saturday night in South Bend. They rebounded from a loss against Air Force two weeks ago. They went from their lowest point to their highest point in the season. After losing to Air Force, Brian Kelly had two weeks to evaluate his quarterback predicament and to prepare for USC. It looks like he used that time very wisely. Kelly went with sophomore Andrew Hendrix. "I hate to use the term 'dumb it down.' But we really drew back the amount of plays and tried to keep the game plan simple for Andrew. I was really impressed with him tonight." said coach Kelly.
Brian Kelly used a ground and pound approach against the Trojans. An unusual tactic by the spread offense loving coach. He used many two and even three tight end sets to pound the ball against USC. Cierre Wood had a career high 32 carries for 195 yards and two scores. His intent was to let Hendrix get comfortable and not ask him to do to much. That game plan worked and worked well.

Cierre Wood continued his strong season with 195 yards on the ground and 2 touchdowns.
In the second half, the play calling got a little more aggressive. That is when you started to see Hendrix's play making ability come out. He showed a great awareness in the pocket scrambling and rolling out to make throws down field. With the Irish up 15-7 and the third quarter winding down, Hendrix hooked up with freshman Davaris Daniels for a 29 yard touchdown to make it 22-7. Then in the fourth, Hendrix showed off his arm. He launched a bomb in the endzone to TJ Jones, who caught it perfectly in stride for a 57 yard touchdown to lock up the game.

On the other side of the ball, Bob Diacco had the defense firing on all cylinders. They easily had their best performance of the year. They shut down a big time program. The Trojans could not get anything going on the ground. They were only able to gain 16 yards on the ground. Matt Barkley also had a tough night against the Irish pass defense. Picking up most of his yards in garbage time, he passed for 220 yards. It was an all around great performance by the Irish.
