Irish stunned
Air Force upsets #17 Notre Dame 37-27

Air Force running back Asher Clark had a huge day with 239 all purpose yards and 2 touchdowns.
This is not what Brian Kelly had in mind when he pictured his second year in South Bend. "I'm actually surprised were 4-2. We are lucky to be 4-2 with all the turnovers we've had. I've said over and over you can not turn the ball over and expect to win. Well we threw 5 picks today, and look at the scoreboard. Another loss." said the coach. Kelly started his freshman Everett Golson. Not a start to remember. It got awful quick for Golson, who was pulled for Tommy Rees after throwing three first quarter interceptions.

Tommy Rees has been disappointing this year with 10 INT and only 5 TD.
Tommy Rees would get his second chance Saturday against the Air Force. That did not go well either. Rees was picked off twice and only completed 11 of 26 passes. Notre Dame now enters their bye week. This could not come at a better time for coach Kelly and the Irish. Kelly will have a two week quarterback battle as they prepare for rival USC. When asked who will start for the Irish at QB Kelly said "I don't know. We got two weeks. We will see who earns it."

George Atkinson scores one of his two kick return touchdowns.
Irish struggled in the second half to generate any offense after Cierre Wood went down with a strained calf. The only thing that really kept them in the game was freshman running back/kick returner George Atkinson. He managed to return two kicks for touchdowns. That would not be enough though. Air Force's slow paced run game was hard for the Irish defense to stop. Air Force chewed clock in the second half making it tough for any comeback. Running back Asher Clark was the center piece to their offense. He had a huge day with 239 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns.
