Freshman Everett Golson leads Irish on game winning drive
ND 52 PITT 48

Everett Golson celebrates after rushing in for a game winning touchdown with :06 left.

The match up between the Pitt Panthers and the Fighting Irish on Saturday was thrilling from start to finish. They battled back and forth all day with little defense. Combined, they managed to score 100 points. There were plenty of big plays but there was one hero. One unlikely hero. Freshman Everett Golson would step in for his first and biggest moment of his college career.

The Notre Dame defense was stumped and gassed by the hurry up offense of the Panthers. Pitt saw it in the first drive and deployed it all game. In the first quarter, both teams traded touchdowns to make it 7-7. Tommy Rees was sacked and fumbled to open the second. The fumble was returned by safety Andrew Taglianetti for a touchdown. Rees again had trouble all game with turnovers. Irish managed to record a safety then after receiving the punt, Cierre Wood ran for a 36 yard touchdown. Pitt then added another score on the next drive to make it 21-17 Pitt at the half.

The second half got wild. Pitt opened up with a quick score to make it 28-17. Michael Floyd answered with a touchdown of his own. He caught an eight yard pass from Rees. Floyd had a huge game with 10 catches for a 174 yards and a score. The Panthers then kicked two consecutive field goals to go up 34-24. By the third quarter, Tommy Rees had turned the ball over four times. Coach Kelly had enough and turned to senior Dayne Crist. His first snap he rolls out and is hit hard. Crist suffered a concussion and was out just as quick as he went in. What was Brian Kelly to do now? As the third quarter was winding down, Pitt continued to drive. They got the ball down to the Irish 30 threatening to score again. One of the biggest plays happened next when Lo Wood picked of Tino Sunseri and returned it 76 yards for a touchdown.

Lo Wood returns an interception 76 yards for a touchdown at Heinz Field on Saturday.

Coach Kelly decided to go to freshman Everett Golson. His impact was not felt early though. For his first two drives, all he did was hand off to Cierre Wood who had a huge fourth quarter. Wood scored two of his three touchdowns in the fourth. Pitt would answer both of those scores. Tino Sunseri hooked up with freshman wide receiver Todd Thomas on a 45 yard touchdown putting them up 48-45 with 1:48 left. Now Everett Golson could not continue to hand off the ball. Time was not on his side. Golson went 4 out of 5 for 68 yards with the seconds ticking. With just :06 seconds left on the clock, Golson scrambled his way in for a 5 yard touchdown.

Cierre Wood had another huge game with 213 yards and 3 touchdowns.

"We could not continue to turn the ball over and expect to win that game. That is why I made the change." said coach Kelly. When asked about who next weeks starter will be against Purdue Kelly said "As far as next week. I dont know. While we were very impressed with Golson, we are unsure. Were going to see where Dayne is at with his concussion symptoms. Both guys will get reps in practice and we will go from there."
