Off and running
Cierre Wood paces Irish with 222 all-purpose yards and 3 TDs
USF 28 ND 40

Cierre Wood runs 74 yards for one of his three TDs.
The tilt between the Fighting Irish and the South Florida Bulls Saturday afternoon was a roller coaster ride for Brian Kelly. The Irish started out slower than Kelly would have liked. South Florida quarterback BJ Daniels drove the Bulls offense down the field on the first possession of the game and scored. Tommy Rees was shaky in the first quarter and couldn't generate any offense. Notre Dame trailed 7-0 at the end of the first.

To start the second, BJ Daniels was picked off by Manti Te'o as he returned into the redzone. After a series of hand offs, Cierre Wood punched it in for a 1 yard touchdown to tie it at seven a piece. This pumped up the Irish defense who then three and outed the Bulls on the next possesion. Rees continued his shaky performance by throwing an interception to Ricardo Dixon as he returned it 54 yards for a touchdown making it 14-7. Kelly then pulled aside Rees to calm the sophomore down. It worked. Rees then led the Irish on a drive ending in a field goal to make it 14-10. He got the ball back again with a little over a minute to play. Rees connected with Michael Floyd on a 55 yard strike for a score. Notre Dame went into the half up 17-14. That was the turning point in the game.

Notre Dame dominated the third quarter. The defense held the Bulls offense scoreless. Tommy Rees and the offense were able to string together a field goal and a 2 yard touchdown from Jonas Gray. The third quarter ended with the Irish up 27-14.
Skip Holtz and the USF offense entered desperation mode and were able to put together a scoring drive to open the fourth quarter. BJ Daniels hooked up with Evan Landi on a 16 yard score. That made it 27-21 with over seven minutes left. Brian Kelly's mode was to run the ball and chew clock. On the very next play following the kickoff, Cierre Wood broke free for a 74 yard touchdown. Still with over seven minutes, USF got the ball back and scored again making it 33-28 Irish lead. Cierre Wood, again went to work. He scampered again on the next series for a 43 yard touchdown.
