Irish beat Mississippi State 34-17 to win BCS Championship

Its been too long for the fans of the Fighting Irish. Brian Kelly in just his second year has gotten Notre Dame back to the forefront of college football. Kelly and the Irish took on Mississippi State in New Orleans at the Superdome. The opening quarter set the stage for a tough game for both sides. The Bulldogs were the only to score on just a field goal.

Robert Blanton snatches a pitch from QB Chris Relf and returns it for a TD.
Notre Dame used a big 2nd quarter from their defense and the speed of Robby Toma to take a 21-3 lead at halftime. Robert Blanton jumped in front of a pitch from Bulldogs quarterback Chris Relf and ran it back 29 yards for a TD erupting the crowd in the Superdome. "We knew they like to run the option. Coach Kelly told us DBs to be ready to break up the pitch if we had enough pressure initially. It worked out great." said senior Robert Blanton. The Bulldogs returned the kickoff and the offense took the field. The very first play of that drive Lo Wood intercepted Relf and returned it for another defensive TD. This then fired up the offense. Tommy Rees connected to Robby Toma on a slant and he took it 57 yards for the score. That made it 21-3.

Lo Wood turns an INT into a TD.
The Bulldogs made a small push in the second half, scoring once in the 3rd and once in the 4th. But it was not enough. Jonas Gray busted a 94 yard TD run in the 4th to seal the deal. "I couldn't be happier. I'm thrilled we could win this one for the seniors. The boys played great and we still have plenty of underclassmen on this team. We have a great future."

Jonas Gray scores a 94 yard TD.
