Irish silence critics
Defense shuts down Heisman hopeful Andrew Luck
Theo Riddick shushs the crowd after turning a 2 yard catch into a 47 yard sprint to the end zone.
Brian Kelly has done it. He has done what recent Irish coaches could not get done. He has lifted Notre Dame back to the top. After Wisconsin and Alabama lost last week, The Fighting Irish jumped up to the # 2 spot. Now beating # 6 Stanford Cardinal, Notre Dame could possibly play in the National Championship.
They won Saturday afternoon by ball control. Brian Kelly used the ground game and a short quick passing attack to eat up the clock after jumping up 21-0 in the 2nd quarter. Sophmore Tommy Rees was officially named the starter taking over for Dayne Crist. Crist battled injuries all year. Rees managed a great game.
Sean Cwynar celebrates after sacking Andrew Luck.
Andrew Luck is going to be a great quarterback in the NFL, but the Irish held him in check Saturday. They kept him off the field. He only completed 8 of 17 passes for 176 yards. Notre Dame was leading 28-3 in the 3rd quarter when Stanford began attempting a comeback. They scored to close out the 3rd and twice early in the 4th to make it 28-23. With 5:34 left in the 4th the Irish got the ball back. This is when Rees is at his best. He put together a clutch drive to run out the clock converting four 3rd downs. The Fighting Irish put together a great regular season. Now they wait on the BCS.
