USC @ ND
Week 8
Irish wins shootout in South Bend
ND beats USC 49-42 in closing moments
Cierre Wood returned from injury and scored twice in the closing moments Saturday night.
Saturday night's tilt between Notre Dame and USC was full of excitement. This was the biggest game to date for the Irish this year. Brian Kelly felt this game was so big he pulled out the green alternate jerseys for the game. Notre Dame got back QB Dayne Crist and Cierre Wood from injuries. Crist took back his starting job. The 1st quarter was slow for both sides but the Irish got two FGs to take a 6-0 lead.
The 2nd quarter got bad for the Irish and got bad real quick. Matt Barkley unleashed his fury and threw four 2nd quarter TDs. Trailing 35-16 with :9 seconds left, Dayne Crist hit T.J. Jones in the endzone for a 78 yard TD. That made it 35-23 going into the half.
The Irish defense stepped up and held USC's offense in check in the 3rd. The only problem was Notre Dame could not score. They managed one FG making it 35-26. Crist led a drive down to the 1 yard line as the 3rd quarter expired. The first play of the 4th, Alex Welch took a FB dive for a TD. The Irish were closing in 35-33. Then Cierre Wood took over and scored twice in the final minutes to close out USC. This win should put Notre Dame in the top 10. They are putting together quite a season.
*Brian Kelly snagged two more recruits that attended the USC game. Here is where we stand for the 2011 class.
