EA Sports: Purchase or 9-Month rental?
Posted on June 21, 2012 at 01:25 PM.

The publicity surrounding FIFA 13 at E3 was good enough to make me sell my copy of FIFA 12 to Gamestop. If I need a futbol fix, I can always turn to 2010 FIFA World Cup. Along with FIFA I rid myself of NCAA Football 12. In one transaction I let go of my all-time favorite game and my least favorite game for a fraction of their release day value, in exchange for the hope that FIFA 13 will be even better.

EA Sports games are rarely worth keeping beyond a calendar year from their release. They don't hold their value. They seem redundant. For every advance, there is a flaw. To tuck them away, then find a box filled with games that are several years old, is embarrassing. Then you do the math ($59.99 times a bunch of games=too much for a gaming fix). I have a box filled with original Xbox games. Those games were survivors of an earlier purge, for an embarrassingly poor trade-in value.

Maybe some subscription based download model would be a better deal. Retailers would be devastated by this. Gamestop would be doomed, another empty slot in the mall, or shopping center. They would disappear like coin-op arcades. Big box retailers would write gaming off, just as they did with VHS and will soon be doing with DVD.

I don't sell everything every year. I've gone to an every-other-year approach on sports I like but don't love. NBA 2K12 is a keeper, but I won't be getting this fall's installment. I hung onto NHL 11, and I might grab NHL 13, if there are decent Black Friday sales or other deals. GT5 stays since it's not an annual release and gets periodic DLC. Top Spin 4 stays until Top Spin 5 comes out, if ever. NCAA Basketball 10 is a collectors item to me, in spite of flawed gameplay and dated graphics. F1 2011 was on the bubble, since I've hung onto Sony's underrated Formula One Championship Edition. I may never give up PYS 6.

I look forward to the new and improved versions of FIFA and NCAA Football. I hope they justify the hype. If not, the "rental" cycle will repeat, and more money will be lost.

Good points. I decided to just got with GameFly to solve those problems to me.
I added it up and the 5 or 6 games I was getting for sure were around $230, whereas 10 months of GameFly is about $240. Which I can rent whatever I want. Obviously I know I wont get FIFA 13 RIGHT away or anything. But I'd have so many games I'd want (NHL 13, Far Cry 3, Hitman, 2k13, and NBA Live 13) and Madden. So I dunno. I agree though that they make their previous games obsolete after they release their new game.
