Cincinnati Survival in Philly

Champions generally have the following qualities: they dominate, or they are able to stage a comeback. Game One between the Phillies and Reds was truly historic. A no-hitter in the post-season is the ultimate example of dominance. Cincinnati pride should be fully bruised. Remember the brawl at Great American Ballpark, followed by a sweep? While conventional wisdom would say the St. Louis Cardinals came away with the stretch run advantage, they managed to fold, and the Reds retook the division lead, then slowly pulled away. The Reds made come-from-behind wins a habit over the course of the regular season. While rallying to beat the inept Arizona bullpen is hardly historic, there is a resilient quality to Dusty Baker’s 2010 Reds ball club.

Roy Oswalt owned the Reds while he was a member of the Astros. The hitters he dominated in that run are long gone. Joey Votto has emerged as a MVP candidate. Brandon Phillips is no longer miscast as a clean-up hitter. Younger hitters like Jay Bruce and Drew Stubbs are not the typical automatic outs found at the bottom of most batting orders. Ryan Hanigan, Bronson Arroyo’s personal catcher, has delivered in the clutch this season. Dusty Baker is expected to start left-handed Laynce Nix in place of Jonny Gomes in left field, to gain a platoon advantage. The veterans with the post-season experience, Scott Rolen and Orlando Cabrera, will not allow their inexperienced teammates to submit to the H 2 O Phillies rotation.

The Reds must return to Cincy with a split. Winning Game Two could prove to be much easier than trying to take a deciding Game Five, in front of the rabid Phillie crowd. Registering a two-game sweep in Great American Ballpark could be equally difficult, given the power of the Philadelphia lineup.
