If you're like me and a fan of sim-style sports gaming, you may have practically wet yourself at the news that MLB '09 the show was including all sorts of roster goodies like the 40-man roster and Rule 5 drafts that haven't seen the light of day since the days of All Star Baseball. And then you saw how these items were implemented and initially wanted to tear your hair out. The interface to manage your team is cumbersome at best, and labyrinthine at worst. But is it all the fault of the designers? ... Read More

Just because there aren't enough of them yet
Because I'm impatient, I simply updated the rosters with whatever update was available yesterday evening and launched into a full-blown franchise with the lowly Pirates. I played one spring training game against the Phillies and promptly got my butt kicked. Obviously there's going to be some slider tweaking (but not as much as in the past, I think), but here are my thoughts so far (one game and playing around with the franchise options). ... Read More

This is the first entry in what will (hopefully) become a regular blog where I will briefly highlight issues in sports games that are just begging to be fixed. So without further ado:
NCAA Football Critical Fix #1: Stupid receivers
Has this ever happened to you? Your quarterback is somewhat mobile, and after dropping back to pass, there's no one open. There's an opening to your right, so you scramble, buying yourself some time. You again look downfield and notice ... Read More

1. Beyonce must write a song about how she's 58 and still single because she's too damn picky and full of herself. Single Ladies has to be one of the most obnoxious songs I've heard in a long time.
2. New song writers must actually write new songs, and I'm not even talking about re-makes. First it was Rihanna stealing from Soft Cell, then Sean Kingston ripping off Ben E. King, and now there's a new song (I don't know the artist) that just took the background music from Time of ... Read More

Recently, in a stunning display of total partisanship, all but three Republican members of Congress voted against the Obama Administration's economic stimulus package. Whether this was a toeing the line by those members, simple obstruction, or legitimate votes against because of differences in philosophy is irrelevant. They can vote however they want to. Who am I to tell Mitch McConnell, Eric Cantor, John Boehner, or anyone else how to vote? That's not the problem. At the end of the day, democracy ... Read More

Let me get this out of the way first: I anxiously read every update that the Madden bloggers have been posting. And some of what they're saying sounds really nice, if it turns out as I hope it does.
That said, I'm about halfway through my first season in a NCAA 2009 dynasty (I just got the PS3 in January), and I came to a rather unfortunate conclusion yesterday: I've played this game before. On my XBox (minus the 360). In fact, in some ways, the game was BETTER on the XBox. ... Read More

Another year, another off-season, and another year of the usual series of emotions for the long-suffering Pirates fan:
- Oooh...look at all the free-agents out there. Surely we'll be able to pick someone up. I mean, the team was awful last year, so they can't seriously keep the same group this time around.
- Hey, we've made offers to a bunch of guys
- Crap, they all signed with other teams
- Hey! That guy took LESS money to
Bear with me here folks, because I need to rant a bit.
I nearly died yesterday. No, really. I took one step off the curb to cross the street, and some idiot came tearing around the corner making a hard right and nearly clipped me in half. If I had been power walking instead of just taking my time, I wouldn't be writing this right now. As the guy passed by me mere inches from my knees, I noticed with little surprise that he was yakking away on his cell phone. So not only was he ... Read More

Now, I'm not saying that Ben Roethlisberger is constantly being dissed by the media or that he regularly tops the "Most overrated QB in the NFL list" (except maybe in the occasional OS poll), but in listening to some of the Super Bowl postmortem analysis, it's clear to me that some people just need to get over the fact that Ben is one of the elite QBs in the game today. For example: the question was put to Jim "Playoffs?!?" Mora whether Roethlisberger should be considered an elite QB -- mentioned ... Read More
