The San Diego Padres won their first game wednesday, beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 in Chase Field. After starting pitcher Mat Latos gave up the lead in a four run sixth inning the Padres came back strong in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs against three relievers.

Edwin Jackson was the third starting pitcher for the D-Backs in a row that couldn't reach the sixth inning against a patient Padres club that's hitting .270 with an on base percentage of .375.

In the bottom of the ninth closer Heath Bell walked the first batter he saw. With two outs Stephen Drew reached the warning track and just missed sending the crowd home happy.

The Padres have a day off tomorrow and travel to Denver to take on the Rockies who are also 1-2 to start the season. The D-backs will take on the Pittsburgh Pirates in Phoenix.

The Arizona Diamondbacks were winners in a ping-pong game. Closer Chad Qualls gave up a 6-5 lead in the the top of the ninth inning. A half inning later the D-backs rallied as they loaded the bases against loser Luke Gregerson and Miguel Montero hit a single just under the glove of David Eckstein to cap the win.

Wade LeBlanc went only three innings and gave up six runs. Four were courtesy of an Adam LaRoche Grand Slam in the third inning. D-backs' starter Brandon Webb wasn't sharp either. In five innings he gave up five runs and only struck out three batters.

In the final game of the three game series in Phoenix young righties Mat Latos and Edwin Jackson square off.

The San Diego Padres have lost their Opening Day match against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Padres' bullpen couldn't hold on to an early lead in a 7-3 loss.

Jon Garland was the Opening Day starter for the Pads and looked very sharp early on, throwing four perfect frames to start the game. The fourth inning was a three-pitch inning.

Garland, however, had to rely on his sharp sinker too much (first 28 pitcher were sinkers) as his secondary pitches weren't effective. That came back to haunt him the second and third time around. Garland was lifted in the seventh after giving up back-to-back singles. Luke Gregeson relieved Garland and Miguel Montero immediately popped up in foul ground. Adrian Gonzalez made an over the railing catch for the first out. Pinch hitter Ryan Roberts failed to lay the squeeze bunt down and Adam LaRoche was toast at the plate as all three runners took off. Roberts then worked a base on balls and that set up a two run go-ahead single for Kelly Johnson.

Arizona starter Dan Haren had a tough first outing. He left after the fifth inning after throwing 98 pitches. He walked David Eckstein for the second time with one out in the third inning. Two batters later Adrian Gonzalez roped his second double of the game against the center field wall. Scott Hairston homered to left center three pitches later. That was all the offense for the Pads who seek revenge tomorrow when youngster Wade LeBlanc takes on former Cy Young winner Brandon Webb.

The new OS Full Minors Rosters are just out and that means my Padres franchise will start not later than today!

I won't post the Contract Goals I have b/c I don't care .

What I do post is the batting/pitching/defense/overall rating at the start of the season:

Batting 24th
Pitching 9th
Defense 23rd
Overall 17th

The overall ratings for the other teams in my division are:

Dbacks: 23rd
Rockies: 6th
Dodgers: 3rd
Giants: 16th

So I should be about middle of the pack here. These rankings will of course fluctuate b/c of injuries and trades.

The previous post I said I would be playing with Injuries ON (random injuries) but with people who are injured long--IRL--to start the season manually injured and placed on the DL.

Now I just simmed ST with everybody not injured (so Nathan, Volquez, Bedard and Lee will play to start the season) and made moves that were necesarry:

Notable Injuries:
3/6 Chad Durbin (PHI) - 1/2 Months
3/7 Doug Fister (SEA) - 2/3 Months
3/9 Austin Kearns (CLE) - 6+ Months
3/19 Ricky Nolasco (FLA) - 1/2 Months
3/27 Dustin Nippert (TEX) - 1/2 Months
3/28 Vernon Wells (TOR) - 2/3 Months
3/31 Chris Snyder (ARI) - 1/2 Months

Trades:
3/28 Giants trade Fred Lewis to Blue Jays for player to be named later.

I had to do this to keep Blue Jays a bit competative. The player to be named later will be traded in a month (got that noted). That player can OR help the Giants on the short term OR on the long term. That depends on the situation the Giants will be in. I'll check if it's a fair trade of course.

At this moment I'm sending down players and adjusting every teams' Opening Day roster to my likings. This is gonna take a while. Hopefully I'll be able to play a game today.

I'm a Red Sox fanatic, though I've never started a franchise with them. This year will be no different. Like last year (NY Mets) and the year before (Cubs) I'll be playing with a National League team, because I dislike the DH and I like the tactics that come into play with the double switch.

I've tried playing with an AL team (Twins) after the V2 Operation Sports Roster came out. Although I liked it, the pitcher in the 9th hole makes the game so much deeper.

This year I'm gonna start with the San Diego Padres.

Why the San Diego Padres?
-NL-team
-Great ballpark (in size and looks)
-Fantastic - young - pitching
-Great looking outfits
-Middle of the pack team (I do like challenges, but I hate to lose ALL THE TIME with a team like the Pirates or the Astros)
-Nice division with teams like the Dodgers, Giants and Rockies.
-Adrian Gonzalez

Other teams I considered: Reds, Nats and Braves.

So what am I gonna do now?

I'm gonna wait for V4 (and the franchise file) to pop up. Then I'm gonna set the lineups, rosters and injuries to where they were on Opening Day (so no Nathan all year, sorry Twins), put injuries back to auto and: PLAY!

I'll be doing the call-ups for other teams and I'll also manage injuries. I'll watch the trades the CPU make, so when anything weird pops up I'll veto.

In-Game Settings: Hit and pitch on HOF level (depends a little on the sliders I'll be using). Guess Pitch OFF, Meter pitching, I use the left stick, Fielding and Baserunning on MANUAL. And that's about it I think.

I'll post box scores and standing here and occasionally some league leaders.

If you have any advice or questions, be sure to comment and I'll react as soon as I find the time.
