Maurice Clarett - 6 Years and Running
Posted on September 5, 2009 at 06:01 PM.
It was six long years ago when I first saw a True Freshman running back single handedly demolish a decent Washington State team (remember WSU used to be decent).

As a true freshman, Maurice Clarett was on top of the College world. His run's were powerful, unique, mesmerizing, and always over to fast. His skills could make the best college defensive players in the nation look like Pop Warner back-ups, and his skills could undoubtedly make the average fan fall off their chair or twist an ankle jumping up in celebration and dis-belief. Crowd the best Running Back in the nation, Clarett led the Ohio State Buckeyes to a memorable Nation Championship win against undefeated and prior champions, Miami Hurricanes.

What seemed like the next Archie Griffin in the making... Clarett would steer far of course in the years following his triumphant freshman year... in which he was the first back since Ahman Green to lead a nation championship team in rushing.

Clarett would not only find trouble with the law, but try to beat the NFL rule that says you must be atleast 3 years out of high school to be drafted. In 2004 Clarett and University of Southern Cal WR Mike Williams would both drop out of school and challange the limit imposed by the NFL. The court saw in favor of the NFL on the subject, and Clarett would be forced to sit out until 2005. In '05, by huge surprise, the Denver Broncos selected Clarett with their 3rd round pick. After signing a 4yr contract with Denver, Clarett's NFL was over when he was released on August 28, 2005 for "unsatisfactory" performance and conditioning.

After the Broncos sent him packing, Clarett was arrested on Robbery charges in January of 2006. He was charged with robbery, carrying a none licensed weapon, and resisting arrest. He was latter released on bail.... but soon after in August 2006 he was arrested again for running from police in his SUV. When a police spike striped final stopped Claretts SUV, Police found and AK-47, two hand guns and a Katana.

Clarett was sentenced to 7 1/2 years of prison in Dec of 2006, but may apply for early release after 3 1/2 years. He is currently taking long-distance classes at the University of Ohio trying to earn his BS in Geriatrics and Gerontology. He also send blog letters to family members to post in his personal web Blog (Link at Bottom).

His blog entry's are intriguing as they show a new, motivated, and life determined Clarett. Clarett has fallen so far in the past half decade, prison seems to have given him new meaning to live and a greater appreciation for life and family. If Clarett gets out of prison with a Degree and finds a study job and becomes a law abiding citizen, that will be a great success story in itslef.

He does not have to play football ever again to be a success, his legendary status at OSU remains in tact. He will always be the #1 reason OSU won the 2002 - 2003 National Championship and his game winning Touchdown will live on forever in College Football History.

I don't know if it was so much not being able handle to spotlight, but he had no one to steer him in the right direction. He would have been a heck of a back for the Buckeyes and possibly in the NFL, a waste of god given talent if you ask me.

Don't feel sorry for him. He was a great talent but he has no one but himself to blame for his troubles.

Best play he ever made was ripping the ball out of Sean Taylor's hands after an interception in the endzone and getting the ball right back for OSU.
