Redskins Free Agency Update
Posted on July 29, 2011 at 02:27 PM.
July 26-August 4, 2011

With the NFL lock-out finally over, teams could begin to negotiate with free agents. The Redskins have made a splash in free agency, but not their usual splash. The Redskins aren't going to wear their usual "Offseason Champs" T-Shirts as that goes to the Philadelphia Eagles because they won the Nnamdi Asomugha sweepstakes, (but also signed half of the free agent pool). But the Redskins have made some key signings that will bolster their squad now and for the future.

Trades

The first trade since the lock-out involved the Redskins and Denver Broncos. The 'Skins sent DE Jeremy Jarmon to Denver for WR Jabar Gaffney. This seems to be a good trade since Jarmon wasn't going to make the final 53 for the Redskins and now has a chance in Denver. He was just a bad fit for the 3-4 defense.

Disgruntled DT Albert Haynesworth was traded to the New England Patriots for a 5th-Round Pick in 2013. $100 Million for a 5th-Rounder, wow! The Redskins just wanted Haynesworth out of town, and possibly away from the Philadelphia Eagles, who were rumored to have interest.

The Redskins have shipped QB Donovan McNabb to the Minnesota Vikings for a 6th-Round Pick in 2012 and a conditional 6th-Round Pick in 2013. This seems like a win-win because the Redskins clearly weren't going to roll will McNabb and got some value out of him. Also, the Vikings aren't forced to start rookie Christian Ponder right away.

The Redskins have also traded
DE Vonnie Holliday and a conditional late-round pick to the Arizona Cardinals for HB Tim Hightower. There appeared to be no room on the Cardinals RB depth chart with Beanie Wells and rookie Ryan Williams. Also, with the Cofield and Bowen signings, along with the drafting of Jarvis Jenkins, Holliday's spot on the Redskins was not a guarantee.

Cuts

The Redskins have also been active releasing players, whether veterans or for cap room. The cuts are
RB Andre Brown, RB Shawnbrey McNeal, RB Chad Simpson, WR Taurus Johnson, WR Maurice Price, WR Roydell Williams, C Casey Rabach, DE Phillip Daniels, DT Rashaad Duncan, NT Ma'ake Kemoeatu, S Macho Harris, S Sha'reef Rashad, P Sam Paulescu, & OT Mike Williams.

Undrafted Free Agents

The UFDA period was different this year since they didn't sign right after the draft. The Redskins signed a fair share of them this year. They include QB Ben Chappell from Indiana, QB Marc Verica from Virginia, RB Shaun Draughn from North Carolina, FB Kevin Gidrey from South Florida, WR Isaac Anderson from Wisconsin, TE Joe Torchia from Virginia, G/T Corey O'Daniel from Gardner-Webb, OT Willie Smith from East Carolina, DL Thomas Weaver from Villanova, LB Obi Ezeh from Michigan, LB Eric McBride from Richmond, LB Kyle O'Donnell from Liberty, DB Dante Barnes from Norfolk State, & CB Tyrone Grant from Delaware.

Free Agent Signings

Now the fun part of the offseason. The Redskins have been active adding players that can contribute and help their team.

LB Horatio Blades agreed to terms on a 1-year contract. He has been on the Redskins since they drafted him in the 6th-round in 2007. He has been a back-up and special team player his entire, but with Rocky McIntosh on his way out, he could get his chance.

DE Stephen Bowen has agreed to a 5-year $27.5 Million deal, with $12.5 Million guaranteed. Bowen was a situational player with Dallas last year, but saw significant time in their last 9 games. The Cowboys were looking to resign him, but were unable to match the money the Redskins offered. He looks to be a good signing with his experience in the 3-4 defense.

OT Jammal Brown has re-signed with the Redskins on a 5-year deal for $27.5 Million with slightly above $8 Million guaranteed.. Brown is expected to be the team's starting right tackle. He came over on a trade with the New Orleans Saints last year.

CB Phillip Buchanon has re-signed with the Redskins. He will bring depth and most likely compete for the 3rd cornerback spot. Last season he led the Redskins in pass deflections. He will serve a four game suspension though.

G/C Chris Chester agreed to a 5-year, $20 Million deal. He looks to compete at RG and is versatile enough to play Center if Kory Licthensteiger or Will Montgomery don't play well there. He played with the Ravens last season.

QB Kellen Clemens was signed to a 1-year deal. He looks to bring in some competition for John Beck and possibly Rex Grossman. He played for the Jets last season.

NT Barry Cofield agreed to a 6-year, $36 Million deal, with $12.5 Million guaranteed. This signings shows that the Redskins are trying to beef up their lines to make the team better. Cofield had a very good season with the Giants last season, but with their drafting of Marvin Austin, Cofield appeared to be expendable. Although the Giants ran a 4-3, Cofield played the Nose, where he is expected to play in Washington.

S Reed Doughty has re-signed with the Redskins on a 3-year deal. He will see a lot of the snaps at safety as long as LaRon Landry is injured. Although, Landry is just being held out for precautionary reasons, Doughty brings good depth to the team.

DE Kedric Golston has re-signed with the Redskins on a 1-year deal. He will likely bring depth to the defensive line. He started at right end last season, but will likely only be a rotational guy this year. He has been a good rotation defensive lineman for the past few years for the Redskins.

K Shayne Graham has signed with the Redskins. He is going to bring competition for incumbent Graham Gano. Gano really struggled last season, hitting only 24 of his 35 field goal attempts. Graham made all 12 of his last season.

QB Rex Grossman has re-signed with the Redskins on a 1-year deal. He will look to compete with John Beck for the starting QB position. He started the final 3 games for the Redskins last season as they wanted to get a good view on him.

LB Rocky McIntosh has agreed to a 1-year deal to re-sign with the Redskins. In a surprising move, McIntosh is back. He started next to London Fletcher on the inside last season, but was not expected to be back as he appeared to be a poor fit in the team's new 3-4 defense.

WR Santana Moss has agreed to a 3-year, $15 Million deal, with $6 Million guaranteed. Moss, is arguably coming off his best season where he grabbed 93 receptions for 1115 yards and 6 touchdowns. He should be the Redskins number one option again this season and has shown no signs of slowing down.

C Donovan Raiola agreed to terms with the Redskins. He will bring offensive line depth, if he makes the team.

P Sav Rocca agreed to terms with the Redskins. The 'Skins needed a punter and got Rocca from the Eagles. He had an average of 43.8 yards per punt, which is an upgrade over the Redskins' average of 40.6 yards per punt. The 'Skins needed stability at punter as they had 4 different guys punt last season. Also, the Redskins have now signed a player from each team in the division.

WR Donté Stallworth has agreed to terms with Washington. He looks to bring in competition for the WRs. With the Ravens last year, he had 2 receptions for 82 yards.

CB Byron Westbrook has been resigned as an Exclusive Rights Free Agent. He has been with Washington the past few years and has most played on special teams.

CB Josh Wilson has agreed to a 3-year, $13.5 Million deal, with $6 Million guaranteed. Wilson was reportedly the Ravens top priority this offseason. He looks to replace Carlos Rogers opposite DeAngelo Hall. Wilson had a much better season (statistically) than Rogers, but some of that could be accredited to the Ravens front seven, which is significantly better that the Redskins.
